And what reason did they use for removing it... Kevin Smith needs a birth year as there is at least 2 I know of..

- Kevin Smith (Ares on Xena)
- Kevin Smith (Famous for Clerks plus lots more)

If he is removing it without documentation... there is a reason for a no vote.

If he is removing it saying there is only 1... you vote no with reason there is at least 2.

So either way I would be voting No if I see one taking the year away from either Kevin Smith.

Yeah, but what about the guy that doesn't notice that change (its buried way down in the cast list for example) right off and its two or three weeks worth of updates later when he submits a change and carries that birthyear along with it unbeknown to him.  How is he supposed to make that note?

Face it, birthyear is broke, and won't work as implemented any more than common name will.

If he doesn't notice to put the note on there then you are free to vote no since it is a change that is not noted either way. If it isn't noticed then the contributor is doing a poor job.... I always look over all of what I am contributing. when I contribute.

I am not saying that Birth Year is the best thing for this... I don't know what would be...  BUT that is what we have... and how to handle it is in the rules... so until there is a change all we can do is follow the rules for it.

well its been removed from jay and silent bob and I believe a few others, check for yourself.

I think that if a birth year is approved, it should be immediately locked in, and not allowed to change afterwards, thats the only way to avoid the back and forth changes

I'm talking about there is an update pending right now from someone else that is taking the birth year off of Kevin Smith...
That someone else has put on kevin smith that I agree with and would like to remain.
all his movies did have and should have the birth year right now... but someone just contributed a bunch where that was a noted change.

Then fix them the way you want it to be in your LOCAL database cast lists, lock them down, and forget about it.  Don't play the game then, however, by uploading profiles with birthdates.  Let other people add them or not in their local db.

As long as it is in the rules the way it is... it doesn't have to be local... any contributer can and most will contribute birth years... and as long as the rules are followed doing so there is nothing that can be done about it

What you have to remember is the rule for this is still fairly new... so people need to learn about the rule...  Then a majority of the people will follow the rule whether they like it or not. There was a couple different rules on the old site that people didn't like but they still voted correctly... even though they would state something like "I don't Agree but it is what the rules say to do."

Well, a bad rule is a bad rule, and following it just because it IS a rule is just as bad, if not worse.  Somebody has to stand up and say "this is wrong and isn't working, and should be done away with."  I guess that's me, because I'm not going to go along with this.  I will not accept updates with birthyears, I will not contribute profiles with birth years, and I will vote neutral on any I run across in voting.

I may not like the rule... but I can't think of something better to suggest... and I for one see a need for it's use... so until something is changed I will use it. and document it if I add it myself.

I understand and appreciate what you are saying... of course you have that right. I am fine with seeing you state your opinion and often as you like... after all your opinions are just as valid as everyone else.

I will also say I respect how you are saying you will handle it... that way you are not stopping it from going through. I will also say however... where you say you will not upload Birth Years... that is very cool... but if by doing so your contribution  remove a valid Birth Year without documenting that it is wrong I would have to vote no as you would be removing info that separates the 2 actors.

This I agree with. If someone makes a contribution with a birth year which is accepted, then it should automatically be locked in the database (and the BY for the other actor should also be included and locked).

However what would happen if I only had one Kevin Smith in my db (say the Xena one). If I suddenly cquire a film featuring the other Kevin Smith, how would my db know it's a different one?
Then when a BY is added, wouldn't it just add it to the wrong one?

The other option is to stop birth years being submitted, and we just ask Ken / Invelos on this forum to add birth years to actors when we find two the same.

good suggestion, I third, even though I firsted, the lock down of birthyears, if people don't like birthyears they can take them off their personal library and lock their library, but for the good of people who don't know they should be included.  Honestly If I bought a Xena season,  I would think jersey boy Kevin Smith was in it!!  and be disapointed to see he's not.  haha... so... i agree, either it gets lockdown or ken puts them in or something.

Skip I think you're missing the point of all this....
Kevin Smith and other people already got birth years added, with documentation!!!

Then people are coming in behind those contributions, and taking the birth years off, both on purpose and on accident.  Hence the ping pong effect, which is the whole purpose for this thread.  To get something done about people taking the birth year OFF.

I for one am tired of seeing it submitted then taken off, then submitted and taken off... it needs to be somehow attached to a lock down feature.

Does the comparison screen for contributions flag changes/differences in BY?  If it doesn't, how would someone contributing a profile with an actor/crewperson WITHOUT a BY know that the online profile HAS a BY for that person?  And that by contributing his version WITHOUT a BY he's overwriting the existing profile WITH the BY?

I haven't tried to contibute a profile which would change a BY, so I don't know what you see if there is a difference in BY listed.

Maybe people are removing BY data without knowing it.

Documentation wouldn't help in such a case because the contributor doesn't realize he's making a change.

It shows on the contribution page, when you click to submit.

Either way, it needs to be addressed, simply by either a lock down, or something else.

Ken,  will have to decide i guess.
