I submitted a profile update of a new DVD, 'Black Snake Moan, with UPC 097363461944.  I've gotten two votes saying I should use the nickname of one of the cast.  First, the current profile was submitted before this DVD was even out for sale, so nobody had a physical copy of it till yesterday.  I went out specifically to buy it on the release date.

The character of Charlie is played by Skip Pitts, and he is credited on the disc as 'Skip Pitts', which is how I entered it.  The previous profile has him listed as:  "Charles 'Skip' Pitts [Skip Pitts]".  When I went back to the notes for that submission, there is only a statement by the contributor about his 'nickname,' but no sources are given.  Since that is a violation of the rules, I dropped that and only listed him as 'Skip Pitts.'

Secondly, the previous contributor used the 'common name' slot to add that nickname.  Even if that is a legit nickname, it should've been entered as ["Skip" Pitts]  and not his entire name with "Skip" in the middle name position.  However, I contend that since the common name field is NOT fully functional, and the entry is wrong in execution and undocumented to boot, both NO votes to my update are illegal, per the rules.

I'd like some sort of word from Ken and Gerri about this sort of thing.  This is getting completely out of hand.  I must've voted on at least a dozen submission in the last couple of days where people are not using the common name area correctly - even assuming it was working right - and others are letting such changes go through by voting Yes.  It has to stop.

Can I get an Amen Brother?!!

I think until there is a hard and fast rule from Ken, this "common name" stuff should be shelved. It's almost worse than figuring out maiden names!!!

Seriously, I believe it's doing more damage than anything right now. I refuse to vote on most stuff with common names, and I will not allow it in my local DB until it's actually a working feature. It's not even a "beta" feature of the program... more like a lambda or tau feature.

"Charles 'Skip' Pitts is not an actor, he's a musician.

Here are just a few links that shows that he goes by the full name, incuding "Skip" as his nickmame.

www.hollywood.com/movie/Black_Snake_Moan/2445462

From the first site:
Although guitarist  Charles “Skip” Pitts also played on many Stax records, he got his start in Washington, DC. Before he was even fifteen, Pitts was part of a doo-wop group that auditioned for Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records; soon after, he backed northern soul great Gene Chandler on his “Rainbow ‘65” hit single and performed on Chandler’s Live at the Regal album. By age sixteen, Pitts was playing with the Isley Brothers, then, a few years later, he joined Wilson Pickett’s Midnight Movers. Of course, Pitts is best known for the mighty wah-wah chords that cut through the opening of Isaac Hayes’ seminal “Theme from Shaft,” as well as his onstage work backing the Black Moses.

From the myspace site, look under band members:
Band Members Charles "Skip" Pitts - Guitar Willie "Too Big" Hall - Drums Ben Cauley - Trumpet Scott Bomar - Bass Marc Franklin - Trumpet Derrick Williams - Tenor Sax Kirk Smothers - Barritone Sax/Flute Jim Spake - Tenor and Barritone Sax Hector Diaz - Percussion Marvell Thomas - Keyboards Ronnie Williams- Keyboards

From the nytimes:
So it seemed only natural for him to turn to the drummer Willie Hall and the guitarist Charles (Skip) Pitts from the Bo-Keys while creating the score for “Hustle & Flow.”

“They did ‘Shaft,’ they did ‘Truck Turner,’ ” said Mr. Bomar, referring to two Isaac Hayes blaxploitation movies. “And in ‘Kill Bill’ Tarantino used some of the score from ‘Tough Guys,’ and the parts he used were intros to songs that were pretty much Willie Hall and Skip on the high-hat and wah-wah.

So, skip is clearly his nickname. Since he's better known as Charles 'Skip' Pitts, then I think that it's clear that it's his common name and not Skip.

Mr. Pitts' name should not come from his 'other' life, it should be based on how he is credited in the films he has been in. So far there are two; ,Black Snake Moan,, where he is credited as "Skip Pitts" and 'Forty Shades of Blue' where he is credited as "Charles Skip Pitts". Based of Ken Cole's comments about picking a 'common name', at this time either "Skip Pitts" or "Charles Skip Pitts" could be used as a 'common name' but he has not yet been credited as "Charles 'Skip' Pitts" so that one should not be used.

edit: replaced 'Charlie' with 'Charles', that will teach me to post at work looking to see if the boss is checking on what I am doing.

I disagree.

For example.

Robin Thicke stars in a film, but uses 'Rob Thick' as his name.

Now according to what you are saying, that even though his music name is Robin Thicke, we wouldn't use that as his common name, but just use Rob Thick as his credited name.

But then a few months later he releases a DVD of a concert, and it's clear that it's Robin Thicke and the same one that starred in the earler film.

Having two entries for the same person is needless and by doing so there is no way to connect him to his film since his film credit would have been credited as Rob Thick - instead of Robin Thicke.

And since Rob Thick is not his common name, you couldn't use that in his DVD concert as his common name to link the 2 DVD together.

Getting back to Charles 'Skip' Pitts.

Right now I guess there is 3 possibilites.
1. Common Name = Charles 'Skip' Pitts - credited as Skip Pitts
2. Common Name = Charles Pitts - credited as Skip Pitts
3. Use only the credited name

To me #1 is still the best.
There is enough documentation that shows that it's what he goes by and is best known as.
It also would link him to any future DVD that he may release as a musician.

#2, there is no documentation that shows that he goes by Charles Pitts

#3 - Sure it matches the dvd credits, but as pointed out there would be no way to link him to any future music DVD that may be released (which is highly likely that he would use his more famous variation of his name).

I'm getting a headache from all of this.

Exactly the common name function isn't so we can see how they may be addressed in other sisuations.  It was so the various DVD profiles we have could link the same actor that may go by more than one name in film credits.

The fact it has single quotes around the nick name "Charles 'Skip' Pitts" sounds like the original contribution took the information from a third party source.  Most film credits I've seen when use double quotes for nicknames when being displayed in the film credits.

But anyway Rifter followed the rules and listed him as credted.  So the voters shouldn't be voting No, if anything they should be at least voting Yes with only comments that they would like the profile to keep the original contribution.

Anticipating how someone could be credited in future DVD releases offers no benefit.  Best to wait for those releases and re-address previous DVD profiles that may need to be updated then.

The name linking works just fine, contrary to the opinions of some here.

Can we please not have this conversation again?  Nothing in the rules say people have to wait so they are not going to wait.  If you don't want to use the feature, fine, don't use it.  But understand, people are going to vote 'no'.  Just let the 'no' votes stand and let the screeners decide.
