I could live with that.  Make all multi-episode and multi-movie sets boxsets, allow all the information in the master, AND allow child profiles.  This is one area I've always felt very strongly about, as most everybody knows, and if *I* can agree to a compromise, so can everybody else.  Those that don't, are only interested in having things their own way no matter what.

John... is that you?

is this one of those alternate universes they show on SG-1 all the time

Kidding aside I have to admit John is correct with his if *he* can agree to a compromise, so can everybody else. Not saying he has never compromised but this situation he has always dug his heels in deep, real deep, sometimes right into the person he was debating with...

I for one appreciate the willingness to compromise on this topic and would like to assure you that it is returned from me.

I use child profiles, but I too remove box set data from parents if I'm doing anything else to them. For me it seems ideal to have all the information in the parent and children both, with no box set links in the DB, so that people can form profile box sets without much hassle if they'd like, but those who only want the parents aren't affected.

But then this has all been said before...

That's what I'd like to see. It makes the most sense, and keeps both sides of the argument happy.

I like it.

But that reminds me of something I wondered about before...is it possible to copy a whole chunk of a cast or crew list and then paste it into another profile? For example, if someone took the time to add all the cast or crew members for an entire TV series, using the funky new dividers to indicate episodes, and then wanted to take that info to create Child profiles for each disc or episode can they do that without needing to re-enter everything manually one person at a time? It would save a lot of work I am thinking...also for crew members that vary little from episode to episode, it would be handly to be able to copy a chunk of the credits, the paste it again in each divided section....

I hope I am being clear....it makes sense in my head.

Didn't know that.
"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture."

I don't know if you can do it in chunks, but you can copy and paste the whole thing and then delete what needs to be deleted. It's much faster to delete that type the whole thing!

COMMON NAMES:
http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=37108
-Consensus decision here is to use iMDB as a starting point for the common names. Obviously, there would be individual cases we would need to debate in the forum, and we of course would do so, but we would need your approval to go forward with this system. The "Credited As" feature would be then used to tie together multiple variants of one's name (various names a person has been credited as) and promote database accuracy.

In the Contribution Rules Committee Forum Ken had this to say regarding this topic.

Quoting Ken Cole:
Quote:
Using any single source as the authority, while tempting, may result in legal problems.  On a case-by-case basis, looking up names on one or more sites (or simply in an Internet index search) to help determine the most popular reference is acceptable and shouldn't cause any legal issues.

Another alternative is to simply total the credits by Credited As to determine the best name.  If Bob Smith is credited in 70% of his films in our database as "Bobby Smith", that's the name he should have.  Thoughts?

Yes eminently sensible for those with 'Western' style family names but when it comes to THE EAST - in particular, those who star in Chinese and Hong Kong movies - I suggest there is the need for separation.

For example, take the Shaw Brothers classics.  Most of the actors in these are hardly known in The West or not at all.  Their names should therefore, in my opinion, be recorded in the traditional Eastern style where the family name comes first.  In some cases, e.g. FU Sheng, there is an addition of a Western first name, in this case Alexander, and he is generally listed as Alexander  FU Sheng.  This fast became a standard HK practice, particularly in commerce, accelerated of course by the fact that Hong Kong was a British ruled colony until 10 years ago.  The same thing is now happening quite rapidly in mainland China, something I can attest to from several visits to Shanghai.

So, what I am saying is if the Hong Kong (or whatever) movie is one that has principally had distribution in the East and its actors have not appeared in Western movies, then it is the interests if DVD Profiler to achieve an authentic database by entering the names as the Chinese do.

The 80% rule can apply, of course, with the current generation of actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, or Chow Yun Fat who have achieved true international recognition and established common name use.

Jackie Chan - alias Jacky Chan, Chen Yuan Lung, Chen Yuan Long, Chen Long, Chen Lung, Cheng Lung.  Make my point?

NOTE:  since posting this comment, I have sighted the topic "Proposal for Romanization of Names of Chinese/Hong Kong Actors".    Accordingly I am reposting this response to that topic.
