I don't mind if people contribute these "new" IDs as part of a wider contributions. But I wouldn't want to see all DVDs recontributed with just an alternative ID.

Personally I use AnyDVD so all disc IDs that I contribute will be the "correct" IDs. But I'm not sure how useful they will be, since most users will not be using AnyDVD.

One could argue that the correct discID is the one that does not use a driver built to remove copy preventions, something deemed illegal is some countries. I sure hope that most users are not using any of those decripters. I do not.

That used to be (and SHOULD be) the case, but the problem Windows 10 is exhibiting is currently being reversed, somehow, by AnyDVD.

Contributing the inaccurate Disc IDs populates the database with erroneous information.  It's not AnyDVD that is causing the issue, but the updated Windows 10 cdrom.sys driver file.

That's the reason I put "correct" in quotes. And it's the disk ID that will work for anyone that uses an older Windows version.

And by the way, I don't think the main purpose of AnyDVD is to remove copy protection. At least I never use it that way. The main reason for AnyDVD is to remove region protection. And afaik that is not illegal anywhere. In fact pretty much all DVD players that have been sold in Europe the last 10 years or so have been region free from the factory, bypassing the DVD region protection.

One big advantage when using AnyDVD is that all the old DVD disc IDs work, both when downloading profiles by disc ID, and for selecting a profile when a disc is inserted.

There is absolutely no reason for me not to use "correct" (old style) disc IDs in my local database. Whether I should contribute them or not is another question.

My concern is that moving forward in less than the next 6 months. Windows 7 is no longer supported and only builds with 1809 and 1903 are covered for support and patches. So most users that took advantage of the free upgrade for Win7 and Win8/8.1 are now only left with the new cdrom.sys. Certainly from my aspect I have a brand new computer with build 1903. Does that mean I never submit disc id's again?

Use whatever Windows version you have to submit new disc IDs. What I don't understand however is the sudden urge to populate all the old profiles with new disc IDs. How many profiles are there in the database with old disc IDs? 10,000? 100,000? Even if you only own 1000 of them (and many of us own more than that) it's going to be annoying to say the least. I think we need Invelos to weigh in on this before we unleash hell.

Agreed on whatever version of windows.

--

However the main reason I came here is to understand the downvote on my contribution from GreyHulk on this contribution - Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series: Limited Edition
- Disc IDs do not appear to be correct. Pretty sure they should match this Profile - 5051561039690. Are you using Windows 10 by any chance?

---
From my aspect I have no reference point. I didnt have the other contribution the existing contribution had no cover scans or disc id's - as my win10 didnt match the ID's with any existing discs (probably as it saw the id as different). I didnt know that the same discs with different id's already existed.

Not sure what to do

Please go ahead and add the cover scans for that Limited Edition. I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure the Disc IDs should match the regular packaging.

If you're using the current version of Windows 10, DVDProfiler will definitely be scanning them wrong.

That'd be great, but the chances of Invelos weighing in seem to be pretty slim at this point.

I saw that Wigram contributed a few disc id updates that were just released. Here's what I found with Le Samourai (037429208526). Notes here.

Old disc id: A7FAEA29FBA35FA1
New disc id (submitted by Wigram): 5E639F200DACC3ED

My disc id, with Windows 10, build 1903: 5E639F200DACC3ED, but it's not found in the 'Add by inserted disc' screen.
My disc id, with Windows 10, build 1903, with AnyDVD running: A7FAEA29FBA35FA1, and it's found in the 'Add by inserted disc' screen.

So, the disc id has been updated, but it's not found by scanning. The good news is that the old disc id is still somewhere in the database.

That suggests submitting these “new”. Disc IDs serves no purpose.

Has anyone tried reading the disc id via linux or macos. I presume there is some disc id reading software out there for some other platforms.

This might determine whether Microsoft have fixed something in their driver that they have found to be a problem.?

Indeed.

And to make it worse, new DVD profiles with the new/1903 disc id aren't working either. Last week I submitted a new profile for the Criterion DVD of Some Like It Hot (715515223218) with the new disc id. Looked it up via 'Inserted disc' screen: not found.

It makes me wonder if Invelos is filtering them out on purpose.
