| Posted: | | | | I'm finding that I would like to be notified of profiles in my collection that other users have requested modifications too (Especially profiles originally created by myself), rather than having to get on the website and check the Database section for nothing and then downloading the new DB and wiping out your correct data.
I am aware that you can lock data in your own DB, but sometimes there are details you just don't want to change or have changed by less experienced users, and you want to keep an eye on your work.
So, I was thinking that via the Subscription service already in place, as soon as a DVD that exists in my online collection comes up for voting, you receive an email notifying you. How this would work, I don't know, I think I would be happy just for a reminder of an afternoon if say at 5pm (Or what ever time you like), if therewas one or more profiles listed to vote (Unvoted pending updates), it sends me a email reminder. Then when I get home from work I can get busy voting.
I suppose you could have one reminder for every DVD that comes available to vote or just one at the end of the day. A generic 'End of the day' would suit me, see what people think. | | | Last edited: by OdderOtter |

| Posted: | | | | When downloading new profiles you always get the list first, and can then do a Preview of the changes. This still allows you to lock data first if you don't like it, before actually downloading the profiles. Regardless of your (otherwise excellent) idea, this is something you still will need to do. You can never avoid that some profiles get changes that you don't like, and that even may be genuine (e.g. you submitted a profile for a movie, later on it appears that there was a previous release in a different case type with different covers). Now, I just wished that there was an easier method for previewing the profile changes to be downloaded. If it's a long list, it is rather cumbersome to select them one by one each time clicking the Preview button.
With regards to mail notifications of new submissions, I am all fore, because indeed otherwise you'd have to check the website daily to see if there are new submissions. Also since the voting period since to be really short nowadays (I've seen changes being released after 3 days) a mail notification would be very useful. |

| Posted: | | | | Valid points, and thanks for your comments, however this way you can try to limit the damage before it happens and inform the user at the same time, about why the suggested change shouldn't occur. That way you don't have to go though the whole process yourself. Not to mention that i really hate it when your profile gets rejected without knowing WHY!!!!!!!!! but thats not for this discussion.
One example of why I think this will be useful is that in the near future the television series Will & Grace is coming out on the mass DVD market in Australia. Previously the only way to purchase the series was through one of the video chains (Video Ezy...like Blockbuster) that owned the distribution rights for a set time. Now the Video Ezy editions of the DVD's don't have proper UPC's and can only be submitted via Disk ID. Now what I predict, someone will come along, see my profiles for the series and say, 'Hey I should update these' and completely wipe my set out, when in fact 2 different editions exist in the Australian Market. Hopefully they won't have the same disk id's!! I suppose all in all if they did get wiped out then it’s not that big a deal and hopefully they might be smart enough to know it’s new and create a copy and submit the new details into a new profile.
Lesson learned: Be patient and don't buy till the mass release, but hey sometimes you just can't!
However that aside, I still forget to regularly check the website for changed profiles so a reminder for me would still be just as useful, and it might help make this community become more proactive (or is that reactive!?) and achieve more quality with the profiles.
Here's an idea why don't we introduce 'Owners' of the profiles, you can have the choice to be an owner if you create the profile and if you choose to own the profile then you get notified of any updates automatically. That way the original creator will know why a profile should stay relatively the same and have a chance to vote.?? | | | Last edited: by OdderOtter |

| Posted: | | | | I would use a feature which would list all contributions available for voting in my collection, if it would work by RSS. I would not subscribe to an e-mail service doing this. | | | Last edited: by RHo |

| Posted: | | | | Thats also a great idea RHo, easy to do, and i'm sure many would use it too. If this is taken on board i'd like to see RSS for some other bits on the site too, like latest posts in the forum etc. |

The RSS feeds obviously have to be personalised, but also for obvious reason the password should not be in the URL. But I guess there would be a solution for this. Either do not include any authorisation at all (there is no real private data involved if the collection is set public) or include some kind of key which is not the password (some kind of personalised not easy to guess URL given in the my profiler section). |

| Posted: | | | | For an RSS feed it would not be necessary to include the password. The user name should suffice.
Since one can only vote when the profile is in the online collection there isn't much breach of information if I were to enter a different user name.
And one cannot vote on something one has not in his/her own collection. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

The latest release has a nifty new feature for this. Select the first item in the list and click on preview changes. Then, hold down CTRL and click on either "Ok" or "Cancel" and it will automatically bring up the preview for the next one in the list. It works great. As for the OP's suggestion, I personally look forward to checking the database each day. It's just a part of my routine. But an RSS feed of submitted changes would be cool and I think I would use it if it were available. | | | "I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. Mega-bummer! I read that new feature in the release notes and was wondering what functionality it applied to. I just thought it was some functionality I never use, LOL! |

When I click Cancel the checkbox still remains there in front of the title. So I think it will still download the update for that title, no ? |

Try cancel on one that you don't mind downloading and then see what happens. I admit, I never use cancel. If a contribution contains info I don't want changed I just lock that section and hit Ok... | | | "I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. My bad, you're correct, the cancel button will only cancel if you changed a flag(s) in the comparison window. The OK button will save any changes you made in the comparison window. The first thing I do when I do a mass comparison is deselect everything before I start checking the individual profiles. But if you have them all selected to begin with, then a cancel will leave them all selected. Hope that made sense. | | | The Other DVD Forum Why do people who know the least know it the loudest? |

| Posted: | | | | Your explanation makes sense but the behavior of the software doesn't . The preview button just gives a preview and doesn't change anything, so a Cancel doesn't make much sense. I'll try your suggestion of resetting all checkboxes (I assume there's a single button for that ?). So then clicking Ok should set the checkbox ? |
