What is your thoughts on the genre Animation?

Yes I normally make genres what I want locally and lock it. But I ask this because I got a DVD last night that is a movie consisting of all puppets. Think a movie like "The Dark Crystal" and one of the genres... actually the first main genre... is Animation. Personally when I think Animation I think cartoons.... so this seemed to be an odd choice to me.

So what are your thoughts? Are movies consisting of nothing but puppets Animation? And if so would you have it in the first genre spot?

I think it depends on what type of puppets. Are we talking about stop motion puppets or live action puppets?

I would never think of a movie like The Dark Crystal as animation, regardless of it being exclusively puppets. Even with stop-motion puppets, I think it's a stretch to call it animation, but there's more of an argument there.

Not animation.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Like Television, Animation isn't even a genre and shouldn't even be an option.

According to IMDb:

The Puppet Monster Massacre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy
Team America: World Police: Animation, Action, Comedy
Thunderbirds (1965): Animation, Action, Adventure

The typical definition of Animation extends beyond cartoons to describe anything that is made to come alive, i.e. animated.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/animated
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animation#Mechanical_animation

As to whether it should be included on a list of genres, is another discussion. You could make a case for another field for "type" of movie that includes Live Action, Cartoon, Puppets, etc.

Animation is one of the few film genres that is objective, not subjective.

IMDb's definition of Animation (might not be yours):

Animation

Over 75% of the title's running time should have scenes that are wholly, or part-animated. Any form of animation is acceptable, e.g., hand-drawn, computer-generated, stop-motion, etc.
Incidental animated sequences should be indicated with the keywords part-animated or animated-sequence instead.
