Suggested rule change:

"SRP
Use the SRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) at the time of the DVD’s original release using the currency type matching the locality of the DVD. Do not change the SRP in DVD Profiler to reflect reductions in SRP that distributors make in continually over time following release. Ensure the currency type matches the locality of the DVD. Do not make contributions with changes of a few cents/pence to the SRP at any time. "

"at any time" is unnecessary.

That's all it would need Telecine.
I think it's time the rules had a major overhaul - there seem to be an awful lot of these debates going on recently - and they would all be unnecessary if the rules were only a bit more clear in their intention.

Edit: I disagree Dan, I think it is necessary, as pointed out by this massive thread! The sentence as it stands can be interpreted different ways, those extra 3 words would stop that.

Not if you use a literal interpretation of the rule. On a literal interpretation, the rule would only apply to post-release titles IMHO.

At the most, all you need to do is separate the last sentence and place it in bold as I did above. The sentence is clear enough.

That would also be acceptable Dan.
Another option would be:

"Do not make contributions that include changes of a few cents/pence to the SRP."

How about:

"SRP

Do not make contributions with changes of a few cents/pence to the SRP.

Use the SRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) at the time of the DVD’s original release using the currency type matching the locality of the DVD. Do not change the SRP in DVD Profiler to reflect reductions in SRP that distributors make in continually over time following release. Ensure the currency type matches the locality of the DVD."

I agree, Dan. I go by the old saw, if it ain't broke don't fix it, you'll only make it worse. The Rule functioned perfectly for the last TWO+ years, and only posed a problem whaen a user decided he was going to willfully break the Rule, and then attempt to rationalize it, and drag a bunch of users with him on a basis other than logic.

As long as the sentence is alone, I don't think it matters. I would place it at the bottom though.

I find that insulting Skip. What makes you think you can assume my basis for saying that I agreed with Andy's interpretation of the rule?
Just because I dared to disagree with you, I am now illogical?
I read that rule the same way as Andy ever since I started using Profiler, well before this topic came up for discussion and I am well peeved at your attitude!

The reason I want to place it up front is so that it does not follow the "released" portion of the rule and cannot therefore be seen to only apply to released titles.

Yes, that's right Skip, I willfully broke the rule, and in fact I did it just to piss you off.

And as you say I am aiming to destroy the rules, and the whole database with them. And what is my masterplan? Yes it is a fully documented change to an undocumented contribution of a just announced pre-release DVD that no-one will have in their database.

Damn, you caught me... it would have worked if you were not protecting the rules and database Skip.

Andy

Telecine: I think either your fix or Dan's would do the job.
We just need to separate it from the sentence about release dates.

Separating it takes care of that.

I think it sounds better by placing it at the bottom. As I said, it doesn't really matter either way and it won't matter if it's in bold, quotes, italics, underlined or given any other emphasis. Just make sure to separate it from the rest.

North:

I am sorry you are peeved, but there simply is no logic in that rationale. I believe that I have rather thouroughly dismantled it. It simply doesn't hold water, north, it's nothing personal, unlike some here I don't deal in personal. I deal with data and logic, nothing more nothing less, I don't even have allow my own preferences to cloud my thought processes, I look at a problem, where the program is and devise what I think is best anwer. Which is what good database designers do. Now does that mean my answer is correct, nope, if you lock two Db designers in a room to solve a problem, you are likely to get two different approaches. So it falls to debate of the logic of the "solutions'. IF I can be persuaded of the merits of another position, I am more than happy to change, but MORE often than not the opposing logic doesn't stand the tests, it really is that simple. You typically do not see me firing the first shots of a personal nature, or making comments like "I hate you", like some users do. I don't hate anybody, loath them or anything else. I have much better things to waste my time and energy on than hate. I haven't said this for awhile, but as far as I am concerned, you are all my friends and should any of you find yourself in my neck of the woods, please feel free to let me know, you will find an open door and a friendly face.

Andy:

I didn't say you did it to piss me off. But it is clear by your behavior that you have done it willfully, oir else you would have made the coirrection and you wouldn't be trying to spin to defend your breaking of the rules.
