| Posted: | | | | I would suggest a slightly different approach gunnar. Select the fields you ent to contribute, instead of deselect. I think deselect would prove ummmm problematic | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

You are to be highly commended for this brilliant concept. (I ran out of Greenies already for today. I'll catch you tomorrow.) This is the kind of thing that justifies the effort of group collaboration and cooperation. If nobody else grabs it, I'll put it on my list of upgrades to make to the DVDPca (Profile Contribution Assistant Plugin), but nobody should wait for me - we could use it ASAP. | Posted: | | | | Video format appears to be in the basic requirements for a new contribution (at least according to the last one I tried to submit). I'd also suggest requiring one of the DVD/Blu-ray/etc boxes to be checked.
Various other UI enhancements:
If the requirements aren't met, don't allow the [next] button to be active at all.
Add a select all/deselect all button for each page of data. Whether you go with the default of selecting or deselecting, hitting every single checkbox is a pain to deal with if you want to flip things around.
A [cancel] button. |

| Posted: | | | | @Blair, here is an idea. If you are not (yet) comfortable with plugins, you could actually build a standalone app (use C#) that does all the validity checking, etc. Then you could turn it over to a plugin developer who could package as a plugin and implement the "Submit to Invelos" button (or something like that). Anyway, that's a thought if it helps you any.
The downside of this method would be that you would not have the advantage of the goodies Ken gives us to help fill in the dropdowns with allowable options.
One more thing: Ken of course could implement this in a heartbeat. The selection screen is mostly done (Copy/Paste function). Why not also write this up as a feature request and point to this thread. It is such a neat idea, he just might pick up on it ... | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! | Posted: | | | | Gunnar, excellent design, especially with Kinematics suggestions taken on board. Mediadogg is correct, what needs to change is the script from the Invelos site on contributing, it isn't the hardcoded PC program. So do we need to hand out red arrows to attract the attention of Invelos's watchful eye? | | | Eric

| Posted: | | | | I expected some comment on the level of selectability, but since it hasn't been mentioned I guess I'll have to take it up myself...
Do we need to be able to select audio tracks and subtitles individually? Or would it be better to just lump them together and have one checkbox for all audio tracks and one for all subtitles? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

I can't dive into this right away (I have way too many other projects I need/want to catch up or at least advance on... I have too many hobbies!) so it's more likely to be tackled by someone else first who really wants it, but I haven't had any decent programming projects to work on for a while now. Thanks for the idea. | | | If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

| Posted: | | | | As someone with one of the larger collections of oddball titles, let me just throw in my two cents and I'll go back to dormancy.
I used to avidly contribute these. However, the combination of the incessant rules and field changes and the constant sniping and bickering about the rules and contributions and the nastiness endemic to this site and some its most frequent users has dissuaded me. As a result, I almost never visit the website, and very seldom contribute anything any more, and am unlikely to do so. I am much happier now.
The Contribution Wizard strikes me a as a good idea though. Just make it as simple, straightforward and idiot-proof as possible. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

Well said, and, unfortunately, true of many users. Keeping up with the constant rule changes/forum decisions/common name threads/birth year threads is a full-time pastime. No one can be expected to keep up with it all. Quote: As a result, I almost never visit the website, and very seldom contribute anything any more, and am unlikely to do so. I am much happier now. I too felt this way. I stayed away for ages and didn't contribute. Now, I contribute but keep my forum participation to a minimum. Much happier. Quote: The Contribution Wizard strikes me a as a good idea though. Just make it as simple, straightforward and idiot-proof as possible. 100% agree. I get a serious bee in my bonnet about contributions and lack of contributors. There are far too many people who sit back and take what other people do. That's always going to be the case. However, if we all did that this database wouldn't be worth a thing. It would be full of IMDB cloned rubbish or stuff people just make up. Often, people take offence at my viewpoint and they're entitled - but seriously if they can't see that by doing nothing to improve the Invelos database they are aiding in its demise? Profiler is, quite simply, the best DVD/BD (etc) cataloguing program out there - believe me, I've looked for alternatives. It's versatility and capabilities keep it way ahead of its competitors - and a large part of that is the user built database. But, if the users don't build it...no one will come! |

As long as you stay away from cast and crew, contribution really isn't that difficult. Nearly every field in Profiler is optional so everyone should be able to make a basic contribution. And birth years and common names are also optional, all you need to remember for an initial contribution is "as credited". It's only when you start to make changes to existing profiles that you need to take care so that yoiu don't accidently undo someone else's work. Unless you are making valid corrections of course. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | I try to add as much "lesser known" movies and music DVDs to the database as my free time allows me to do, I usually do not add the big titles, as those are getting done by a lot of folks Donnie | | | www.tvmaze.com |
