I think it does need a program change so that all titles beginning 'Frasier: ' are treated as the same series, but surely this would be very complicated to implement. Films with subtitles would mess it up for a start.

The way to do it, as has been suggested already, is to move the season indicator to a separate field, like the edition field works now. In the meantime it's possible to use the edition field locally if that isn't already occupied by something more important. Personally, I keep all my titles locked in the manner I prefer them so I don't really care how it is done in the online. It's never going to please everyone anyway.

I wouldn't want my list to look like...

What list are you talking about?

When I click on an actor the titles they appear in are the Title, not Original Title. Therefore, I would still get Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 4: Disc 1: Episode 1 etc.

Are you talking about a different list?

I see what you're getting at now, T!M.

However, that's not what I've been seeing.

I've been seeing a lot of English original titles being mucked around with.

So:
Bones: The Complete Season One

with an Original Title of:

Bones: The First Season

But, where is this supposed 'Original' title being taken from? The title of the show is simply Bones. The opening credits say Bones not the season rubbish.

I'm sorry, but if the title is in the same language then the use of Original Title for TV Shows seems utterly ridiculous; and one of those rare occasions when I think that Profiler has completely lost the plot.

I am talking about the display name in the main program itself.... there is an option to use the original title for collection list and all.

tools-->options-->display-->title format

Those that use original title for the title format will see for example 7 to 8 titles all saying nothing but Buffy the Vampire Slayer if the season info is not in the original title. I believe that is part of the reason  Invelos has us using season info in the original title now.

Bingo!
My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT.
FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that.
Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it!

I do agree with this - it seems very odd to use the Original Title field for this. There should be a separate field for the season number.

Close, but not exactly. I don't want a fixed drop-down list, it would still be a free text field that should match the text on the cover. This is necessary to allow for odd cases like "Season 1&2", but it would no longer have any impact on the title count because of variations between different releases and localities.

I'll give you an example of a CSI set that I had and what happened when I upgraded to the Blu-Ray of the same set:

DVD release: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete First Season
Blu-Ray release: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The First Season: Special Widescreen Edition

Are they the same title? Yes.  So the Blu-Ray release has an original title of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete First Season, to link every cast/crew member in those 2 profiles back to the same 1 season.  According to the CLT, William Petersen has 438 titles in the database. Has he starred in or made that many movies or TV shows? Not even close. So any profile of CSI (Las Vegas) Season 1 must have an original title of the DVD release mentioned above. It was originally released under the DVD title above, so that's what the original title must be, no matter how much people don't like it.  Even if it's 1 word or number off (like 1 vs. One), each differently entered profile (language, locality) of CSI: S1 only has 1 original release title, and that's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete First Season.

Same applies to (example) UK profiles. UK seasons use Series instead of Season, so any release that's differently worded must have as it's original title the title of the UK release, since it was released in the UK first.  Example: Downton Abbey: Series One may be cover-titled Season One elsewhere in the world, but it's orignal title must be Series One for proper linkage AND to prevent the bloating of the database with that 438-title mess.

I don't know how I can explain it any clearer than this.

Shoehorning in technically incorrect data into a database field is generally not a good idea. And since season indicators are not actually part of the original title, technically this is incorrect data.

Original title is used for more than display purposes. It is also used for looking up titles at IMDb. And putting season indicators in that field screws up that search capability.

You may think that this is a small price to pay for getting the functionality that you want, but it violates an important principle - if the correct data does not give you the functionality that you crave, the way to correct it is to change the program, not violate the data.

Unfortunately, getting a program change is a lot more difficult than violating the data.

That was the decision of Invelos.... not us users. So until such time something else is done or decided on by Invelos it is what we have to do.

Maybe so...but, I'm sorry...you won't catch me contributing a single profile with this rubbish in it and I will actively remove it from any profile I download. It's utter rubbish and shouldn't be done.

I of course wouldn't dream of trying to tell anyone what to do with their local databases. I was only saying that until a time that Invelos changes their mind... I imagine once they update the program to be able to have season indicators in their own field or what have you... we have to make our contributions as they request them to be made.
