I'm not. E.g. I do like The Simpsons and have watched every episode, but for me they play in a completely different league than the series on my list.

Don't know all the other show but I do know Bonanza. I liked it as a child but would I watch it NOW or would I rather grab the Deadwood DVDs from the shelf?

Those Top 10 are always snapshots of the present situation, in another 20 years my list would certainly look different.

As far as my list goes, I mean the 1959 series.

I'm surprised how "The Simpsons" is so far listed quite low, if at all. As I mentioned before, I don't watch much TV series at all, but I would have thought that (20 years of) The Simpsons were much more represented in top10 lists here. It seems that many of the Scifi-series are going to end up quite high - and that genre is especially something I have missed over the years... except Space 1999 which was one of my very favourites as child.

Since we're looking at series as a whole, at least in my consideration 2/3 of the run (of The Simpsons) has been fairly crappy.  When it's good, it's genius, but on average it's eh.

To be honest, so far I have seen only very few episodes from seasons 13-19 (by accident on television, as of course they are not yet released). Up until season 9 or 10 the quality has been quite high for my tastes. Too bad if it has "tired down" in most recent seasons...

Look at my list. Except for HGWT, you listed shows which I never enjoyed on a regular long-term basis. Well, maybe Red Skelton, too, but he stole so much from Keaton, it hurt too much to watch after a while.

Hi Cliff, long time.  The point of my list was that those shows for the most part ran in prime time for years and then on cable for even longer in some cases. most of them from the 50's and 60's. I have seen very few references to shows prior to the early 80's for the most part and most of those are sci-fi.  Was not a criticism or complaint merely my observation.  Please note I did not solicit anyone's opinion about the list merely stated no one had mentioned them.  After all the thread asks for the 10 greatest series of "all time". I guess the point of my post was to point out that there were some fairly long running shows before the internet generation that did provide solid entertainment value.  The sad thing is that I'm old enough to have watched them when they were live broadcast before the pre-recording craze took over.

I listed it as number two on my list, behind "What's My Line" and ahead of "Playhouse 90." Guess...
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

I'd say 'The Dick Van Dyke Show qualifies'; and it was #1 on my list!

I agree with your point. Nearly all the lists have nothing earlier than 1970 on them, as if tv did not exist during the era of the DuMont network or even pre-Fox. Without the live tv drama shows of the early 1950s, "Marty" would never have been written as a screenplay to win an Oscar.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

That could also depend on the age of the forum users. I was born in 1977, I've never seen a TV show from before the mid-70s.

And even then: I have enjoyed Knight Rider and A-Team very much when I was young but I would not nominate them for "best show ever".

I agree with that completely. I'm a bit younger, have seen some series from before the 70's but to me ("Lost in Space" to name one), I wouldn't count them on my personal top list though.

Now you mention it, I might have seen some, too. (e.g. Time Travel, Mr. Ed). But since they require really hard remembering on my part they belong on a "I might have seen a few episodes" list at the most.

Exactly. Only tv shows filmed in the 1950s would survive: "I Love Lucy" was unusual, in that it was on film, so the west coast saw exactly the same quality images and sounds as the east coast. Most (non-serial, non-drama) tv was live from NYC, with a kinescope feed to the rest of the nation. Very few kinescopes survived the transition to videotape. All surviving episodes of "Mr. Peepers" are lower quality kinescopes. Same with "Playhouse 90" and other high quality tv drama anthologies. "Gunsmoke" and other surviving tv westerns were on film.

So, yeah, if you were born after early tv, those shows have never existed for you... how could they be on any of your top 10 lists?
