Quick question and I think it is answered by the contribution rules but it doesn't appear to be being followed at the moment.

Should blu-ray cover images be taken out of the slip case?

All of the discs in my collection so far appear to have be done in the case so that the blu-ray logo is on the top (like Superman II).

I need to reconnect my scanner at some point but would like confirmation before doing too much on these titles.

Thanks.

I'd take out the inlays, personally. It would be nice to have the Blu Ray/HD-DVD header, but more important to get the best out of unique part of the cover.

It may look fancy in the begining to have the blue-ray logo at the top of the scan. But as your collection grows it will become quite boring and redundant. The fact that it is a blue-ray profile is prominently marked in the database. Therefore and for the sake of quality I would take the cover out of the case before scanning.

The consensus so far, has been to include the top of the front Blu-ray or HD DVD case with the logo, as part of the front cover scan.  The back cover, scanned by itself without the case.

As mentioned by Nadja, I take out the inlay to scan it and get the best scans I can get, then I transfer the scan to "Photoshop" where I overlay it on the correct Blu-ray or HD DVD template needed, that I have previously scanned (I have all types, including "HD DVD/DVD Combos"), to give me the finished scan.  The best scans of both front and back covers.

If you notice in 3.0.1, Blu-ray and/or HD DVD is no longer "prominently" marked in the profile, now that there is a "Media Type" choice.  The "Media Type" choice doesn't carry over to the online "My Profiler" data base - unless you continue to put the Blu-ray or HD DVD  name in the "Edition" section (previously called "Desc." in 2.4 DVD Profiler), which most people are no longer doing.

Without it being designated in the on-line "My Profiler" data base, only the picture wtih the Blu-ray/HD DVD logo on it will let people know that it is an HD disc.

My humble opinion is that because they contain text, logos etc then the case should be included. After all, if a DVD came out with something on the case as well as the inlay, we'd expect that to be scanned too.

Correct, I do not care that much about the "My Profiler" database. Locally it is prominent enough, and in "My profiler" it could be easily changed by Ken (like the country of origin).

Browsing trough the availabale US blue-ray profiles I can't see a general consensus here. There are profiles with cover scans including the case on both the front and back, none, and front only. But the majority of profiles do not have cover scans at all. As stated before, I would not scan the case.

Agreed. Since the cases are standard they are not part of the cover.

I prefer the look of scans with Blu-ray or HD DVD logos. They make it easy to pick out which are high def discs and in which format. I have both and would strongly support including the case top in cover scans.

I have searched the net for a nice picture of a blu-ray case.

That I have put in Photoshop as a layer and cut out the cover.

When I know scan the paper cover I want, I insert that as a new layer and merge them together.
It takes only about 10 seconds extra.

This way, I do have nice and consistent looking BD-covers.

If you want to see 'mine', look at my online collection. I do think they look nice

ps If someone wants my photoshop file, just send me an email or pm with your email and I'll send it.

I prefer the front of BD and HD DVD cases with the logos, myself.  Makes them easy to spot since they're intermingled with the standard DVDs.

That has something to do with phpdvdprofiler. It just shows 2 times the same (front) cover when it is only uploaded as thumbnail.

The frontcover has BD logo, the backcover has not.
