I have for a long time now been very happy with DVD Profiler but have latly started to be a little annoyed with it.

I'm sure theres other posts about this topic in the forum but theres was so many i desided to start my own topic so people would have a better chance of seing my post.

I REALLY don't understand why IMDB isn't a good enough source for cast in movie... i like imdb very much i have made many profiles in the past with that site without them gettin rejected...

You can't really expect people to sit and watch the credits all the way throught to get cast in a movie for dvdprofiler... maby it's just me or theres a lot of REALLY patience people out there.

I've been looking over the forum to se if i could find a link to a site thats allowed to use but without luck so if there are any then please tell me.

It's just a peice of software for organizing your movie collection and with all this perfection in the end people are just gonna stop making profiles or simply just leave cast out of the profile.

Hope people get my frustration over this and don't get to much offended.

First, as a rule the cast and crew must be as credited to avoid ping-ponging. IMDb is not "as credited". And also IMDb does not allow scrapping their data for other databases. Therefore to avoid legal actions from Amazon/IMDb, Invelos takes more attention to it, that the data is not coming from IMDb.

Yes, we can and we do. And it is not so much work as you think. It least it is not for me.

The credits must be as credited, so the only source that matters is the movie itself.

The rule that the cast must be as credited is not new. It exists for a few years now. Only because you got IMDb cast through in the past, doesn't mean that it was OK to do so.

For Profiler to be able to use it Invelos would have to pay a fee to IMDB, even then they don't give access to all of their database. (Read the FAQ on their site).

As Ken clearly has no desire to pay this fee then that means he has to ensure he is not breaching the terms and conditions that IMDB set out for use of their site. Which includes not using taking it's data and using it elsewhere.

Apart from the question of data-quality, we can't use IMDB-Data because we are forbidden to do so by the IMDB!

Yes Ken can, and a lot of people do it.
If you don't want to, fine, don't contribute cast & crew, DVD Profiler has the very nice functionality of partial submissions.

The One reason I'd never contribute any cast data. It give me the creeps to only think about credits like LOTR:ROTK:SEE where the credits run for 15+ minutes with 3rd assistants to 2nd assistant directors to ...

Understand that contributing to the database is not mandatory. You are free to use whatever data you want in YOUR LOCAL DATABASE. I have posted this in another thread and will link it here  IMDB terms of use for your reference.

It is a two way street neither party wants their data used by the other. If you can't watch screen credits to collect your data you are lazy and should not deserve the privilege of contributing. Again DVD Profiler allows the use of the data locally all you want. You simply should not contribute it.

DVD Profiler still does what it was intended to do without using the online database. The sole purpose of the program is a database of DVD's not movies or television shows. The online database simply makes it easier. Someday Invelos will invariably end but the program you paid for will istill be useful. We experienced a short period of this during the lawsuit between Invelos and Intervocative.

Let me ask the question why if you want to contribute you can't watch the movie. Skip does it and still has time to make almost 3000 posts to the forums.

Ken has been very generous how many programs once you pay for them give you free updates for the life of the program. We should respect his wishes and not put IMDB data in the online database.

Certain people stopping contributions is not necessarily a bad thing. I find almost without exception THE BEST CONTRIBUTORS FOLLOW THE RULES WITHOUT COMPLAINT

I do it all the time... and not only movies... but full seasons of TV Series as well. don't bother me one bit. I don't know if "kinda fun" is right in my case... but definitely easy. and does not take long at all for most titles.

Couldn't agree more, I find it fun & in some way, relaxing. If you think spending a lot of time watching credits and looking out for names is daunting, try going through every single credit for the 18 episodes of Tales From the Crypt Season 2 in a single sit. But you know what? It was FUN, and you should have it too, you'll feel good about yourself for contributing and everybody will have a better, more accurate database.

Remember that you're not required to contribute, if you don't feel like it, well don't. You don't have to be frustrated about it. Take it easy, mate and welcome!

I have been doing for over THREE years now, what's your problem storm

The source of data is the film credits PERIOD. You can do whatever you want to locally, that is yOUR business and that includes using IMDb. Just don't Contribute information that does not follow the Rules. You are not required to make Contributions.

IMDb is a the single most inaccurate source for film data as they have no Rules for their users to follow and their users can Contribute just about anything to the Db and get it accepted, including inserting themselves into film credit lists, it has been done.

This comes up every few weeks and the whine is always the same and so are the answers, this is DVDProfiler, it is not a clone of IMDb, AMG, TCMDb or any otherof the myriad Online sources and we DO have Rules.

ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!
