Right...and when both Blu-ray and HD DVD go the way of Beta in a couple of years, we're stuck with 2 HD players and a bunch of coasters

One major difference, is that at least with a Beta recorder you could continue to use is as long as you could get blank tape. A better example would be the 8-Track tape deck. Most of them were players only, like the current Blu-ray and HD DVD machines.

With all the DVDs you buy, you guys should really consider picking up a Blu-ray and HD DVD players.  Compared to all the money spent on DVDs, player costs are really not that prohibitive.  Once you start seeing movies in high-def, it's tough to spend any money on SD DVDs, especially when they are going to be available in high-def format at the same time.

Right...and when both Blu-ray and HD DVD go the way of Beta in a couple of years, we're stuck with 2 HD players and a bunch of coasters

Neither format will completely disappear anytime soon.  Even if one format was to lose the format war, you'll be able to pickup players on EBay to play the "coasters" for next 20 years.  Just look at LD player listings on the auction site.  I would rather have a pile of discs in high-def that is extinct, over a pile of DVDs.  My biggest problem nowadays is to figure out what to do with all the DVDs I'm replacing with high-def.  You don't get much for trading them in, selling them on auction is a pain, and most of my friends and relatives don't appreciate DVDs.

Give them to me.

And in ten years from now what are going to do with all your Hi def Disc's when 'tri-ULT Def' is the new thing????????????????
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

When I went college for broadcasting (in 1998), we actually used Beta ENG (Electronic New Gathering) cameras and in master control (where the guy sits and plays the shows for viewing) and in the news studio we had Beta recorders/players. The reason being is that Beta is lot better quality tape than the standard VCR. The general public would have had Beta players if Sony didn't keep the patent for themselves, not letting other manufactuers make the players/recorders.
We're on a mission from God.
