In a few recent profile updates I've noticed that some birth years (that i believe have been verified) have been removed from the cast.

the first was the Blade Runner 5 disc set. I went and recontributed the cast with the correct Harrison Ford back in the cast (its voted 38 yes to 0 no) as i know that is correct.

then a few days later I got an updte for McHale's Navy and the birth year (1958) was removed from Bruce Campbell's character, which I am pretty sure is correct.

Then just today I got an update for What Lies Beneath and its the same Harrison Ford issue as Blade Runner.

Additionally the birth year less actor replacing the one with a birth year are the only changes to the cast list each time (well don't quite remember if the Blade Runner one had any other changes).

First, I appreciate those that take the time to do the cast profiles, but it just seems like a prominent actor like Harrison Ford shouldn't be having these birth year mistakes. And also that someone would catch it during the voting process (can screeners accept all except just this change).

Second. Is the best thing to do re-contribute these profiles fixing just that one thing as wouldn't it cause the online database to be incorrect?

Are you saying that downloading an update removed a BY from your local database? Cos that shouldn't happen.
I would resubmit with the BY attached, make sure it's in the online.

I'd say recontribute Mr. Ford with his birthyear, as it is needed to distinguish him from the Harrison Ford born in 1884, though I'm not sure if any of his movies are available on DVD.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I saw in another thread that there's a few movies for the 1884 Ford out on DVD.

I downloaded a contribution update to Sum of All Fears this morning that showed a cast update where Morgan Freeman (w/o BY) would replace local Morgan Freeman (w/ BY).  I let it happen to see what the effect would be.

Local Morgan Freeman held his BY.  I just tried to update Sum of All Fears (which i haven't changed) and it sees the online profile is w/o BY and wants to change it back to w/ BY.

I don't recall seeing the BY in the original contribution (it's not mentioned in the notes).
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I guess part of it is I'm a little confused on how the birth years work (as far as updating profiles)

I understand the birth year on Harrison Ford is present because there are two actors with that name and that is used to distinguish them.

now just checking my database, went to edit cast and searched for Harrison Ford, and only saw the one. I didn't download the changes for the profiles I mentioned, and don't own any titles with the other Harrison Ford. So because I have no profiles with him, would he not show in my cast database?

When you say 'removed a BY from my local database' do you mean removed it from the actor for all profiles or changed the actor in the updated profiles cast? It showed that the cast changed. So wouldn't it be the same as if i changed the role of Deckard in Blade Runner to be played by Will Smith? because Harrison Ford and Harrison Ford (1942) are two different people.

I think I'm slightly confused as to how BY's propogate from the online database to the local database. I guess a simple test that I think helps answer my question is .The upc for my Blade Runner set is 085391144847 if someone adds that now, does it download with Harrison Ford or Harrison Ford (1942)?  (if its the w/o BY one I already have an contribution pending with the BY added)

The Harrison Ford in that profile does not have a BY attached to him.
Because you only have 1 Harrison Ford in your database anyway, it probably linked to him regardless, but there's no BY on that profile.

So technically, the Harrison Ford in that profile is not the same person that played Indiana Jones and Han Solo? well mine has the BY because I kept that and then contributed it. The whole reason I asked was because I then got two more profiles with the same thing, and there was some talk in another thread relating to birth years that had me wondering if my first contribution was even necessary.

From what's been said, I believe I am correct in saying that it is necessary (in order to have the correct actor in the online database)

Sort of but not exactly, lol!
If I understand it correctly, Harrison Ford (no BY) is a sort of limbo actor. If you download a profile containing him and you have HF (1942) in your local, he will become HF (1942).
However if you have HF (1884) in your database as well, he'll become that one instead!
It probably would help us handle BYs if the program did indeed see him as a 3rd separate actor. At least then we can see where he is and start linking the profiles to the correct HF.

I think he defaults to HF 1884 if you have both of them.  Every time someone contributes a no-birth-year HF, I have to change him from 1884 to 1942 since I have DVDs with both actors in my collection.
