Dear,

a child profile is a "sub" profile when you have a box set. For exemple, you have the aliens quadrilogy box set. So the main profile is the profile for the box set that has a UPC and the child profiles are the profile for Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection and the Bonus DVD. So you have the profile of the box set that is linked to the profiles of DVD that are inside of it. To add this child profile you have 2 case:
  - sometime the DVD inside the box set have a UPC so you add them normally
  - sometime there are no UPC (if it's a Digipak for exemple) so you must add them by title or by Disc ID

You can use child profile for TV Show too. So in this case the main profile is the profile of the season DVD Box set with the UPC and the child profiles are each DVD of the season.

If you want an exemple you can go here. It the main profile and you have the link for the 4 movies of the box set here:
movie 1
movie 2
movie 3
movie 4
Regards
Cyrille

Ah, theycould be called all kinds of things. But we call them children or grandchildren and so on. They are simply put a subset of the larger set of which they are part.

Per our Rules
""Box Sets" Containing More Than One Film

The term "Box Set" is used to define any release that includes more than one film. The main examples are:

    * Sets where each film is packaged individually, and held together in a package of some kind.
    * Sets where each film is on a separate disc, but not individually packaged. This includes gatefold Digipaks and 2-Disc sets in normal DVD cases.
    * Sets containing 2 films, one on each side of Dual-Sided DVD.

Create individual profiles for each movie in these Box Sets. Use individual UPCs if they are available or use Disc ID (read on a DVD-ROM) if not. Create each of these individual profiles in line with the standard Contribution Rules with one exception - Cover Images. If a film is individually packaged, use the cover images from that packaging.

If a Box Set contains discs of Bonus Material for individual films, do not create separate profiles for these discs. Add the information to the individual film’s profile as normal for a single film 2-Disc set. If there is a disc of Bonus Material for all films included in the Box-set, create a separate profile for this disc.

For the main Box-set profile, add the individual profiles via "Box set" button. The following Clarifications to the standard Rules need to be used:
Section Clarification / Adjustment to Rules
Title The title for a Box Set should be the title listed on the front cover, for example Alien Quadrilogy
Production Year Production Year for a Box Set should be the year of the earliest feature release in the set.
Running Time Use the combined running time of all the films in the Box Set; do not include running time of any extra features.
Rating If the Box Set has a rating, use it in the profile. If it does not, use NR as the rating. Exception: If any disc in the set is rated Adult, list the set as Adult
Disc IDs Do not include any Disc IDs on the main profile - these are listed on each of the individual profiles.
Easter Eggs Do not include any Easter Eggs on the main profile - Easter Eggs will be handled within the individual profiles.
Credits Do not use credits for the box set - Credits will be listed on the individual profiles. For additional information on handling of TV Series type releases see the TV series section.
Overview If the box set cover contains a listing of contents with brief descriptions of each, enter it directly into the Overview field.  If there is no overview on the cover, an overview from an included booklet may be substituted.  Otherwise, enter an itemized listing of the contents only, without descriptions.

In addition to the above, the following are not included on the box set profile: Subtitles, Audio & Disc Features. List them with the individual profiles."

Thus for example since i am sure you have seen it, your inclusion of Crew data in The Three Stooges Parent Profile was completely incorrect. The parent is blank as spelled out in the Rules . The individual discs are, in this case the Children and they contain all the data appropriate to that particular disc.

You are free to do whatever you wish to do locally but for Contribution purposes the Rules must be followed, thus your data had to be taken out.

You will find the Three Stooges discs listed in the Online database.

Once you download them and assign to the parent profile you will

Parent
    Child
    Child

and so on for as many discs are in the Boxset.

Addendum:

You assign child profiles by:

- open the parent profile
- got to "Box Set" tab
- assign any item you want

In DVDP the parent profile gets a + where you can expand/collapse the child profiles.

I think one of the biggest frustrations I personally had with Profiler was not understanding that children weren't automatically downloaded.  I honestly believe that if they were, we wouldn't have so many newbie entries trying to populate box set parents with data.

Thank you for the responses. They lead me to a new question. Prior to adding the children to The Three Stooges Collection that Skip mentioned, my DVD total was at 496. After I added the children to my collection and subsequently added to the parent, my total jumped to 498. It counts the boxset as 1, and each disc as 1 for a total of 3, even though there are only 2 discs in the boxset.

Since you've asked no direct question:

Yes, it does that.

Most people use the collection number for the real counting. Some decide to number the box set but not the children and some do it vice verse (me for example).

In the personalize section of a profile you can set the collection number to "none".

Antares:

Ever since Hollywood introduced Boxsets sveral years back it has basically made a hash out of that part of the Program. Total DVDs is a misnomer, the Program is actually telling you Total Profiles. AX to how to try and adjust for that, there are many ways that are all dependent on what you, the user want to do. Speaking for myself , I follow the ths procedure

Boxset (Film)
The Parent does not get a collection number, the children do. I am tracking titles

Boxset (TV)
I follow the exact opposite procedure, the Parent gets the number the children do not, again because I am tacking titles and I do not consider the individual disc with Episodes to be titles.

You will notice that this system will "mess" with My Collection, at least if you are trying to view it by collection number. I believe thsi will remain a personal choice for how each user chooses to handle it. Total DVDs SHOULD be changed in the Program to Total PROFILES to minimize confusion, Total DVDs cannot be accurately tracked and never has been able to be, since we are not, generally speaking creating Child Profiles for BONUS Discs. There are exceptions to this, but in general we don't track them yet. The BEST way to track Total DVDs would be to eitherallow us to delineate that "this set has  6 Discs" or to derive a total count from the Disc ID data, though from a programming viewpoint that MIGHT be a bit more complex than simply allowing us to tell the Program  that there are 6 Discs.

I have one other question regarding child profiles.  Answer is probably obvious but want to make sure.  Say you have a boxset with 3 child titles such as in The Godfather collection.  Godfather part 2 has 2x discs.  Is the 2nd disc of part 2 a child to disc 1, or a child to the boxset?

That disc should be part of the the Part 2 profile.

Trane:

Achim is correct. The fact that Godfather 2 is a Child Profile at this point is not relevant. It would be setup as a Profile exactly the same as you would ANY long movie, that would have 2 Disc or (Sides) like The Original release of The Ten Commandments or Ben-Hur. Once the Profile is set then you assign it to the Parent Profile. BTW Godfather 2 SHOULD be already setup, all you should have to do is download it and assign it to the parent.

Yep it was.  Read it from disc and added it to Part II.  Did notice one thing though.  Part 2 wasn't assigned a collection number?!  And when you open the boxset image, the discs from left to right are all out of order...grrr
