I would like a clarification on the use of Wikipedia as a source for a name change. Is this considered a third party source?

I had voted no on a name change that listed Wikipedia as the only source for documentation. I voted no because Wikipedia, which I think is a third party source, was the only source for the data change.

I was the only nay sayer, there were 19 others that voted yes, so I've withdrawn my vote since it seems obvious I'm missing something.

The DVD and change:
21 Grams [025192-416620] “- corrected "González Iñárritu"to be his last name, instead of "González" beeing his middle name”

Thanks for the help.

Kathy:

I have no problem with them as A source, but not the sole source. Being a user created and constantly edited "Encyclopedia" it is almost as notorious for inaccuracy as some other sites we all know and love, and sometimes their ping-ponging of information is almost as entertaining as ours used to be.

That said with reference to you specific issue, I would also wonder why you are deviating from As credited and/or the Credit Lookup Tool. Remember the Credit Lookup Tool is not to establish CORRECT name but to establish the MOST COMMONLY credited name.

I would like to add that, in my opinion, although it may not be the <i>definitive</> source for certain information, it can at least be considered "information by consensus," thus a little more acceptable than "making it up off the top of your head."

That being said, I'm not surprised if Wikipedia information weren't obtained from other known, less reputable sources.

I actually voted on this change, in a different profile.

On screen credit is 'Alejandro González Iñárritu'.
Current Profiler parsing is 'Alejandro/González/Iñárritu'.
Contributor is changing it to'Alejandro/ /González Iñárritu'.

Since it is a parsing change, it is still 'as credited'.  The documentation was enough for me, so I voted 'yes'.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

Ken has advised to use the Lookup Tool with caution and if it can be documented then the contribution can go against it.

Exactly. I would have voted Yes as you did. Parsing is not in film credits, so the Credit Look-up tool has nothing to do with it, in my view. Parsing has to be to documented some way. Wikipedia would be enough for me as well.

Wikipedia vs Brittanica is a close call, research finds

Further endorsement for Wikipedia's credibility: a study by the science journal Nature found the online encyclopaedia to be close to Encyclopædia Brittanica in its accuracy.

Nature asked a team of experts to review 42 entries and were not told which encyclopaedia the information came from.

The researchers found eight serious mistakes - four in each encyclopaedia. There were many more minor errors, including omissions and misleading statements: 162 in Wikipedia and 123 in Brittanica.

Researchers did criticise some Wikipedia entries for being poorly structured. But the results will not be good news for Brittanica which has faced increasing pressure from free, easily-updated, web-based resources.
