| Posted: | | | | Maybe I misunderstand the question but wouldn't simply creating a new database in the desired location and delete the default database remove most (if not all) files in the My Document folder? Isn't this possbile with 3.1 as well (I can't remember but thought this was the case)? | | | Regards Lars | | | Last edited: by lmoelleb |

I thought he was talking about the Layouts and Reports folder. @impilgrim: If you jsut want to move the database, then open the program, choose File, Open Database then create a new one and check "copy current". Then you can switch to the new one and delete the old one. One remark though: Personally in general I don't think it's a good idea to mix the application and the application data in the same folder. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | thanks all,
I'll check the beta version. I want to have everything on a separate drive. If I have to I'll just have the database moved. thanks.
@DJ Doena: I'd like to know why you would not have everything in one folder. this could be something I need to think about.
again thanks for the replies. |

...I'd like to know why you would not have everything in one folder.
Some of the main reasons: 1) Backup - you want to backup your data, programs you just reinstall or reimage (DVD Profiler is a bit odd here, as it has a backup feature instead of just relying on data backup along with all other data files). 2) Multi user support 3) Security. Only on old Windows systems (Windows 2003 and previous) can you expect programs to run with write access to the program folder directory. On a modern system data has to be on a location where the user running the program has write access. I am sure there are other reasons - haven't thought about it for years, it's just the standard and natural thing to do. I (like many others) keep all my data on another partition or disk than the OS. This makes reinstalling the OS less painfull (you can simply format the C drive without any worries). | | | Regards Lars |

| Posted: | | | | I also wanted to store all dvd-profiler-data in a custom folder. Now, with version 3.5 this is finally possible. thats good so far. I already moved the database with the old dvd-profiler-version as this was also possible there.
BUT, dvd-profiler keeps creating an empty "dvd profiler\databases"-directory under "my documents" every time it is started although my database is stored somewhere else and I do NOT have any other database in dvd-profiler.
Is there a way to get rid of this?

Zusan Why worry about it...if you have moved your DB to your choice of folder and the program runs ok from there why worry if the main creates an empty folder in "My Documents". I have been running DVDP from my D:\ drive since V3 with no trouble and having the empty folder is no bother either, doesn't take up that much room as no data is now stored inside the folder. Steve |

Steve Just to clear this up: Iam worrying about this folder, because I hate it to get the "my documents"-folder messed up with empty and useless directories. DVDProfiler is not the only application creating folders there without any use. I would be really glad if Ken will find a way to find a solution for that in the future... :-) Regards, Zusan |

| Posted: | | | | Iam sorry for reopening this 4 year old thread, but the empty directory "dvd profiler\databases" is still created under "my documents" in the current DVDP-release.
Is it, after 4 years, still not possible to disable the creation of this empty directory, Ken? Or did I just not find the option to disable it? |

| Posted: | | | | It might have something to do with multi-threaded operations on startup. Simply put, in order to prevent errors in a task that doesn't yet know where you put the data, a default location is created at startup.
Another explanation might be that it is a failsafe in case the user options (including folder paths) got corrupted or otherwise not available.
I could think of other reasons including protecting legacy code that can't be touched for fear of eroding a carefully constructed foundation. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. |

| Posted: | | | | It could be that the reasons you mentioned are true. But it is just an assumption and I would like to know the current status for sure.
I accept that this doesnt has a very high priority, but after such a long time this issue could have been solved, I think.
Taking into account that it is technically possible, as out of the about 30 other applications with userdata on my pc only one (Quicken 2011) also creates an empty unused directory in "my documents" I would guess, that it can not be such a huge problem. |
