Hey, I was wondering, how do you link to specific posts? I can't seem to find a button and it looks like the only way to do so is to go into the user's profile, see his/her post history and go through there. Is there an easier way?

I been wondering about this myself for some time now. I have seen others do it... but I haven't found an easy way of doing it myself.

If the post is recent / easily accessible, you can go into edit post and copy the address directly from your browser and link it in your new message, as this way it pulls up the message ID part of the address chain.

Other than that I'm damned if I know...

It's a bit cumbersomely but when I want to do that, I do it this way. I hover over the quote button of the posting I want to link to, e.g. yours. Then the browser shows me the link inlucing the message Id, in the case of your initial post it's

http://www.invelos.com/MessagePost.aspx?task=replyquote&TopicID=340753&MessageID=870457

Now you have the message Id which also happens to be the HTML anchor to your post, when you add an "M" to it. So when you take the normal address of this thread which is

http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=340753

and add #M870457 to it you get

http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=340753#M870457

If you want to highlight that message, you have to add the parameter MessageID to the URL. If you do that the selected post appears lightgreen

http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=340753&MessageID=870457#M870457

Not the easiest way, but it works.

Thanks, Karsten.  I was wondering about this myself.

You're right, it looks somewhat cumbersome, but if it works it's worth it.

But for whatever reason the redundant Message ID is what makes it Green.

It's not redundant. The "&MessageId=870516" is a parameter which can be interpreted by a webserver script (like ASP or PHP) which then can decide to colour a posting differently. This happens before the page is delivered from the webserver to the client (you).

The "#M870516" is an HTML anchor and is interpreted by your webbrowser. While the URL points to a certain website, the "#" part points to a certain point within the website.

So it's basically one for server-side interpretation and one for client-side.

'Redundant' wasn't meant as a pejorative.  Just a lousy synonym for repeated.

I appreciate all the instructions here... but without an easier way I personally just won't bother. I will just link to the page and let people find the specific post on that page.

Too bad! Instead of a single person doing some work, every reader has to search for the matching post on the page. Maybe Invelos should implement a "link to this post" function.
