Thumbnails - covers gone from Profiler screen!

I went into DVD Pro tonight and found all my covers (front/back) - thumbnails are gone, just the placeholders remain (image not available). I used the Repair Database utility with no success. I backed that up and then downloaded and installed the new version and still no luck!

I looked into the Database/Images/Thumbnails folder and they are all there as well as the Headshots in their folder. Does anyone have a clue as to what is up? This is a pain.  It is like the program lost the path to the Thumbnails folder or something.

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I would like to avoid the last resort and refresh ALL from on-line.

The thumbnails are created from the big images. What you could do is empty the thumbnails folder entireley and then switch the collection view to "Thumbnails" and then open the same menu again and select "Rebuild Thumbnails".

What does "rebuilding thumbnails" entail? Emptying the folder means I lose all the thumbnails I have some of which are versions I preferred to what is currently approved in the Invelos database.

Also, what "big" images are you referring to? I will probably copy/save my thumbnails to another folder/directory temporarily and empty the folder as  you suggest and follow your lead but I'm uneasy.

The images folder is where the actual covers are stored (usually 700*500 pixels). These are the images you see when you look at a profile.

the thumbnails are smaller versions of that image for the collection list:

For example image:



Thumbnail:



The thumbnails are created from the cover images. So if you clean that folder, DVDP will take the original cover and create a new thumbnail.

Go back and read DJ's post and execute the menu command. Done. BTW I have never had to manually mess with the folders. After executing the menu, everything is usually fine. The work is done for you by DVD Profiler.

I'm having some REAL bad luck!  I see the stills in the Images folder and the stills in the Thumbnails folder and now understand their purpose, thank you. I emptied the thumbnails folder, switched the collection view to "thumbnails" and then looked into the menu for "rebuild thumbnails" and found it and here is where it failed. I get a status box for maybe 1 or 2 seconds and then it disappears. Something is preventing it from completing the rebuild function. Perhaps, something got corrupted, sooooo I ran the DB repair utility ONCE AGAIN and sure enough no luck!  I thought maybe I had to flag all the profiles, even THAT didn't work.

Any more ideas gents? I'm rather pissed at this software now. It has been so reliable until now.

By the way, just so we're clear, both the thumbnails in the collection list/view AND the Front and Back Images for each profile are blank.

I wish you had tried the rebuild without messing with the folders. It has always worked for me. Can you restore the folder from the Recycle Bin? It is not fair to blame the software when you go deleting data that it expects to be there. And, as is often the case, brute force may be the best solution. Go ahead and do the refresh. Go out for a beer or coffee. Come home and enjoy.

Hey! don't blame me!  I was just following DJ's directions.

I decided to take your suggestion and was able to restore the thumbnails as I did not permanently delete them as yet. Unfortunately, I got the same problem - a progress/status bar that disappears after a few seconds. I really do think now that the program was corrupted in some way and oddly enough cannot be fixed.

I see two last options: refresh ALL images as you suggest OR backup the db, uninstall DVD Profiler, download a new copy reinstall a new version and import the backed up database. I'm assuming the backup will include the images as well.

What is your take here? It's late here and I'm off to bed now but hope to tackle and resolve this once and for all tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Sorry.  I'm well known to be an old grouch, but that's no excuse. And I take DJ's advice and help all the time - I trust him. I just had a different opinion on that specifc item. No disrespect intended.

Anyway, whatever you plan to do, it should begin with backing up the database, and I assume you have prior backups.

Then, reinstall DVD Profiler (you don't need to uninstall first).
Then open a new database and restore the backup into it (you can worry about database naming later).
(Optional - you could run a repair at this point)
Refresh all from Invelos - everything.
Backup again.
Enjoy.

If in the unlikely case that you are still having the same trouble, open a support ticket.

Just out of curiosity:

Try the following: Add a new profile to your database (any profile, doesn't matter).
Then edit it and paste any image to the covers.
Does DVDP create the thumbnails for this profile?

DJ - I just sent you a PM. I really didn't mean to challange your info.

It was the procedure - I generally try to avoid doing anything unreversible when a program is doing something confusing, just in case I have to yell at the vendor / author, I can claim "I didin't do nothin' - honest!"

This just keep getting worse. I gave up and tried a "refresh all" on the images and maybe 50% of the images repopulated the profiles. I checked some the "blank" titles in the Images folder and they were there just not showing in the views.

I had already followed DJ's suggestion with adding a new profile last night. However, DVD Pro doesn't allow you to "paste" any image to the Front or Back covers only the cast/crew images. When manually refreshing images for a pofile it works fine so far but I don't relish doing that for hundreds of profiles!

I backed up the db and reinstalled as you said and added a new database but when trying to restore the operation aborts with this error message:

"Access violation at address 0041AD0D in module 'dvdpro.exe' read of address 00000000"

Right now I don't know what to do.  What does "opening a  "Support ticket" entail? The only other thing to do is connect to the other database and manually refresh ALL those freaking profiles.

This is the first time I've ever had such trouble with this software.

Sure it does.
Open MS Paint and draw a stick-figure. Then press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C.
No select a profile in DVDP and double-click on the entry. It'll open for editing. Switch to the cover tab and paste the image with CTRL-V.


Regarding your restore problem: What OS are you using and where exactly do you try to create the database. Have you any programs running that might interfere with the creation of files, like virus scanners or some such?

Man this IS embarrassing. took your advice and was able to copy into the profile. Yes, the program faithfully generated the thumbnail correctly. Must have forgotten this move. I usually try to figure stuff out on my own. Sorry.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit. This is a new desktop from last month. I usually disable my anti-virus/spyware and other apps before downloading/installing/updating etc. That was the case here to no avail.

FYI: My main program files are on my C: drive and my data (images, backups, etc.) reside on my D: drive - both are internal drives. This has proven no problem in the past.
