From the rules.
Any video documentary material regarding the film, or those associated with it.

To me this means a documentary, regardless of length, regarding the film or those associated with it, ie cast & crew.

Let's say you have the movie Titanic and there is a documentary about the real ship in the set. It's not a documentary about the making of the film and none of it's cast/crew.

I think on the movie Poseidon there is a documentary about rogue waves. Nothing about the movie or cast or crew, just an aspect seen in the film.
Or let's say on Twister there is a documentary about tornadoes.

Or what about a documentary about the film studio?

Where does cast audition videos fit, or makeup test videos (some w/o audio)?

Right now it seems some define featurettes as "Any video documentary material or video footage regarding the film or any aspect thereof, or those associated with it regardless if they are directly connected to this specific film."

That's basically how I define it... any video that does not fit within the other categories regardless of the material. But if it is entirely unrelated to the film, I would also add the name to "Other Features."

I guess a lot depends on your interpretation of "regarding the film".

In my mind, a documentary about the real Titanic isn't unrelated to the film Titanic, for example.

Well, I think there will always be grey areas. Bottom line is, the distributor thought the additional material was close enough to the movie of the profile to have it included. Which is one way of interpreting "regarding the film, or those associated with it".

But I see your point. For instance, in later releases of "Saving Private Ryan" the documentary "Shooting War" was included. This documentary is handled in the profile I have as something mentioned in the "Other features", fair enough for me. This way it gets the same treatment as the 1925 Ben-Hur movie, included with later releases of the later, best known, "Ben-Hur". Or things like additional shorts with other profiles (IIRC Looney Tunes shorts with the 1938 Adventures of Robin Hood: on topic, but not on the movie, though the shorts might never have been made if that movie never was...).

Note this is irrespective of where that other material is located. If it is on a separate disk, it may also be put on a separate child profile -- but this doesn't remove the "Other features" texts.

To me, if a contributor finds it too removed from the movie's profile, mentioning it in "Other features" is OK for me. If you download the info and don't like it you can always remove it and lock features. Again, however strict you may (re)define the rules on this, there will always pop up something that seems to be a grey area. So, for me, no need to tinker with the rules here.

For the reasons you list, I would not list these as featurettes.

Because they are "material regarding the film, or those associated with it," I would include these as featurettes.

I would say no to Audition Tapes and Make Up videos as Featurettes... because they are not "Documentary Material" in the cases I have seen at least. I always use Other Features for this.

How are they not documentary material?  They exist because someone was documenting the film-making process.  That would make it a Featurette by our definition.

The ones I seen was nothing more then the video of their audition... or a running video test of how the makeup looks. Nothing else to go with it, no that I do not believe would be considered a documentary featurette in any sense.

Now if Invelos wants to clarify what is meant by "Documentary Material" to include such videos that has no documentary information with them... that would be fine with me. Till then... I will continue to vote and contribute on how I read this rule to be. Which would not include such video clips.

I am not sure what you mean by "has no documentary information with them."  If the material provides a factual record of the events, in my opinion, it qualifies as documentary material.  In the examples given, they are, in fact, documenting the auditions/make-up tests, are they not?  I can give you many examples of documentary footage where there is nothing more than the vidio of what is happening, nothing else to go with it, so I am completely confused by your statement here.

Well, it boils down to the difference between "documentary" and "(raw) documentational material".

I see Pete's point that a documentary is an 'edited' film, with its own director, film editor etc. Raw material doesn't make a documentary yet.

However, what is important here are the rules as quoted in the very first post of this thread. Saying "Any video documentary material regarding the film, or those associated with it." Bold setting by me.

To me that signifies that unedited casting video's etc. are, as far as Invelos is concerned, featurette stuff.

Just for the record, I hate that unedited stuff. I consider it to be cheap fillers. I really DO appreciate properly made documentaries, be that a "making of..." or with a topic that goes a bit further. But Invelos makes the rules, not me    sniff...
