| Posted: | | | | Is there a proper way to enter someone with three initials as a first name, as in a credit for "A.A.A. Smith"? Currently I have three variants of the same name listed as:
A.A.A//Smith A./A.A./Smith A./A. A./Smith
Has there ever been any discussion on this particular issue, especially since the initials filter doesn't touch it. | | | I don't wanna be like everyone else, that's why I'm a mod, see? |

| Posted: | | | | This is not addressed in the Rules, however, I would use your second choice:
A./A.A./Smith | | | Hal |

| Posted: | | | | There is a built in filter for initials. I don't know what it does with triple initials, but I would enter it locally as A.A.A./ /Smith, test contribute it, see what the filter does, then go with that. This way everybody will/should be on the same page. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | the only other credit I've got like that is C.C.H. Pounder in Benny & Joon, but luckily CCH Pounder is her common name. |

A./A.A./Smith I don't like this option myself, since it adds a space that is not actually in the onscreen credit. I much prefer the first, which preserves the credit as it is seen. | | | I don't wanna be like everyone else, that's why I'm a mod, see? |

I agree "A./A.A./Smith" and "A./A. A./Smith" do not preserve the screen credit. "A.A.A.//Smith" does and therefore should be used. |

| Posted: | | | | You could check how the OMB credit of The Lord of the Rings looks like. There should be plenty of profiles. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | Well, that brings up a good point.
How do you know that "A.A.A." is the "first name"?
J.R.R. Tolkien is actually "John Ronald Reuel Tolkien" which means the correct entry in DVDP is "J./R.R./Tolkien". His first name is NOT "J.R.R."
Of course, determining this requires a little research on the part of the contributor. If in fact, this person uses "A.A.A" as their first name, and those letters do not stand for other given names, then "A.A.A." should go in the first name field, but personally, I'd need some documentation to prove that. Otherwise, I'd enter it as I stated above.
Preserving the spacing of the initials onscreen at the expense of accurately entering the name into the correct fields makes no sense to me. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

Preserving the spacing of the initials onscreen at the expense of accurately entering the name into the correct fields makes no sense to me. It makes absolute sense. As the rules state we enter the screen credit, not what we think it should be. Quote:
Take Crew Credits from the film credits only; list names exactly as they are in the credits. Exception: If the credit information is entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead.
That is pretty clear and no real wiggle room for interpretation based on the argument of spacing. So of the screen credit is "J.R.R" or "A.A.A." then we should not be entering in "J. R.R." or "A. A.A." . Now we can enter in a common name if it is different, but that does not alter the fact we are to enter in the screen credit. And we all know the rules about common names. | | | Last edited: by Scooter1836 |

| Posted: | | | | Enter it as credited without spaces. If the filter doesn't change it, neither should we.
Of course it's just another one in a million arguments against name parsing. Oh the folly! | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

So of the screen credit is "J.R.R" or "A.A.A." then we should not be entering in "J. R.R." or "A. A.A." . Now we can enter in a common name if it is different, but that does not alter the fact we are to enter in the screen credit. And we all know the rules about common names. Excuse me, but entering "J." into the first name field and "R.R." into the middle name field IS entering the name EXACTLY as it appears on the screen. The fact that the PROGRAM adds a space between the first and middle name does NOT mean that the contributor has entered anything except what was on screen. There have been many discussions about how to use the FIRSTNAME and MIDDLENAME fields. Entering "J.R.R." is completely against the direction of those discussions when it is known for a fact that "J.R.R." is not his first name. Your priority is obviously presentation, while mine is preserving the accuracy of the data itself. | | | Hal |

This, exactly this...but I would go one step further and remove the filter completely. If the person chooses to present their name in a two part fashion, we should enter it in the same fashion...it's what I do in my local. For me, 'J.K. Simmons', 'J.K. Rowling', & 'J.R.R. Tolkien' are all two part names. For them to be three part names, there needs to be an additional space between the letters. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
