The Criterion Blu-ray release of Watership Down has an option where you can play Storyboards while watching the full film.

It's listed on the back cover as "Picture-in-picture storyboards for the entire film"

These show up as a smaller box overlaid while viewing the film, so they are valid Storyboard Comparisons with the final film.

But these Storyboards are activated by a 2nd Subtitle on the disc. If you turn off the subtitle, the storyboards also close. If you then reactivate the 2nd Subtitle, the Storyboards come back on screen.

So my question is... should "Other" also be added into Subtitles since it's technically not either a Language subtitle or Trivia track? And/or should "Picture-in-Picture" be added? Or, is the current existing "Storyboard Comparisons" listed only in Features adequate?

I think "Other" should be used for subtitle languages that don't have their own selection box, not for extras that require a subtitle stream to function (trivia tracks also use these streams).

I'm sure someone will come along to say the language of the rules trumps the obvious spirit of the rules though.

If it is not an actual subtitle, meaning words on the screen, then it should not be added as one.  I would, however, add PiP.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

What about captions. Some films have subtitle streams which is for on screen location captions only (which can be turned off). From what you both say, these should be added because they have text, even maybe if it is just three lines over the whole film?

What about trivia tracks? That is text?

(For what it is worth, I don't think they should be, just playing devil's advocate).

Yes, trivia is text, hence why it has its own subtitle check box.

Captions are not subtitles and to misrepresent them as such would only be misleading for those looking for actual subtitles.

As for the original question, I would add it as Storyboard Comparisons only. PiP is usually meant for separate video streams but I guess that is too technical for most users. An overlayed static bitmap might look close enough to them so I'm not going to dispute that adding it as PiP has some valid merit.

Many releases use subtitle streams for these captions though, so technically speaking, they could be listed as such.

I agree though, it would be misrepresentative, and I wouldn't agree with adding them at all.

Again, my opinion is:

In my opinion only subtitle tracks that are selectable in the "subtitles" menu should be listed in the profile. In the rare case that the list in the menu is incomplete, only subtitles that are used to translate all (or large parts of the) dialogue should be added. Captions are not a subtitle but only a work-around for the studios because sadly they don't want to spend the money for giving every country their own localized film master that was shown in their cinemas.

That would pretty much rule out all subtitles for most Criterion releases of English language films then, since they almost always have to be manually enabled, as there are rarely (if ever) set-up options for those on the discs.

Well, then this is one of the cases that I meant in the following sentence. These should be added to the profile as well, as long as they transcribe the dialogue and are not used for other purposes.

What about films which have subtitles for only certain languages in dialogue only?

Say, one of the Universal Soldier sequels which has some Bulgarian dialogue, and subtitles are available for that only, and not the English dialogue?

In my opinion this is the same as for captions. On-screen-text that was part of the film master in cinemas but had to be realized via subtitles on the disk because of the use of a clean international master. These kinds of subtitles are almost always automatically activated when selecting the corresponding audio track in the menus and should therefore not be counted as separate subtitle tracks. But as I said this is only my opinion...
