How do you contribute a disc that has an EAN , but no known UPC?  Per the ASIN to UPC converter plug-in, I can get an EAN, but no UPC ... how do I contribute such a disc?

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/0986304425

Thank you,
pat----

An EAN can be contributed for the correct country of release.  If an item has an EAN then it's a European release, but according to the GS1 that is not a valid GTIN so it seems to be an invalid number.

You could always contribute by disc ID.

EDIT: This is actually an ISBN and not a UPC.

i found the EAN (9780986304422) via http://www.asinlab.com/asin-to-ean/.

The way adding a BD via EAN, should be like:
Start DVD-Profiler
Menu -> DVD -> Add DVD to Collection
Enter the EAN in he UPC-Field and Press "Add to Ownded"
Then a Pop-Up Windows should appear where you enter the Movie Name.

Press OK and edit the Profile. After that contribute the Profile as normal.

Don't know, if this helps, but EAN and UPC are equivalent. UPC is an Amercan standardized number and the EAN is an European standardized number.

In DVD Profiler you usually enter UPCs for American localities and EANs for the rest of the world.

Don't bother which type of EAN you find. Since the (long) EAN System has 13 digits, it is able to cope with other numbering schemes rather easy:
- adding a leading zero to an UPC-A code makes it a valid EAN code
- adding a leading 978 in front of a 10 digit ISBN makes it a valid EAN code either
... since there are converting rules for other number schemes (e.g. ASIN) you may find EANs more often than UPCs
Complete list of Common Names  •  A good point for starting with Headshots (and v11.1)

That is technically not true.

The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) consists of 9 digits and a checksum. The EAN (European Article Number) consists of 12 numbers and a checksum. However, the way these checksums are calculated is completely different.

Also the range of values is different. The EAN checksum will be a digit between 0 and 9. The ISBN digit will be a digit between 0 and 9 or an X, for example 345319652-X

Examples of ISBNs and EANs:

EAN: 978-345318768-9 ISBN: 345318768-7
EAN: 978-345319652-0 ISBN: 345319652-X
EAN: 978-345321346-3 ISBN: 345321346-7

However, there are numerous converters from ISBN to EAN available: https://www.isbn.org/ISBN_converter

What is true, is that an ISBN is also the ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) of that book.

Thank you all for your responses!  I didn't realize I could put something other than a plain jane UPC in there when entering a record. <blush>

Thanks!

It can also be mentioned that there are two tools available here that can help when you're buying from Amazon.

- DJ Doena's ASIN to EAN/UPC Converter
- My AsinInfo, which build upon DJ's excellent program but offers - in my opinion - a more user friendly interface.
My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

I used the above to discover there's no UPC, but there is the EAN.  I didn't know about yours at the time, but will check it out when I get home.

Again, thank you all!

Going by the English/German/French/Italian subtitles, I assume that this is a producted originally marketed to Europe which is now also available in the US. But since it does not originate in the US -> no UPC.

ISBNs have traditionally been 10 digits, but they've expanded to 13 digits now.  The title in question actually has a 13 digit ISBN and not a UPC/EAN.  Also, ISBNs begin with 978 or 979.

Incorrect, this is a US produced release.

... and 13digit ISBN use the EAN checksum algorithm. So, what is the difference between an EAN and in 13-digit-ISBN? - The dashes!

It is really cute how afraid of any European thing the Americans seem to be...

No one is afraid of Europeans or any European things.  The UPC, EAN, and ISBN all fall under the GTIN format.
