Problem they are laughing their collective @$$ off. They buying at the same USD price they were, and can still sell at the same CDN price, because the average joe doesn't know better.

I'm starting to seriously consider getting a US PO box. I know some retailer won't ship to those, but some do, and I live about 15-20 minutes from the border.

Live in UK - hell anywhere in Europe and really get fleeced

I was in Toronto once, and picked up a British published and printed book for cheaper than it was in UK (as in ukp was £19.99 can was $29.99) which was dumb, I mean it had to be shipped to Canada just for me to buy it....

Don't even ask about DVD prices - it is still cheaper for me to ship stuff over from Can/US than buy similar product in UK (which might be cut)

Yeah, we don't pay shipping from Amazon UK (well, if you order a reasonable amount) but when I ordered the only decent release of Crank (the German one) from Amazon DE I really got hit... if you can it's pretty much always better to order with your local Amazon but that doesn't help if you can't get what you want there!

In South Africa, we too have been badly fleeced, and in some cases, still are . I generally buy from Amazon US or UK because the prices are around half of what I have had to pay for the same thing here, if it can be found locally , and then they have been pressed. Some local retailer are waking up to the fact that people are not buying locally due to that and have made started making the prices more realistic and inline with the price overseas (obviously taking into account the exchange rate). Movies, single disc used to be R300+ and double disc could be as much as R500 and TV series started at R800. These prices seem to have become more reasonable with movies starting at R144 for new releases and series starting at R250, and older movies can be found for as little as R35.
The other problem has been the release dates – we always seemed to have to wait a year or more to get the releases. I have had many movies on DVD before they even hit our movie circuit by ordering from overseas. This situation is improving and I have been able to get season 6 of 24 before it was released in either the US or UK.
As for books, I will occasionally order from UK but NEVER from US as the postage is exorbitant!! I can usually get the books at a reasonable rate here.

Have you tried Play.com? They have free delivery which is a big plus over Amazon, but not the range of DVDs sadly which is a shame. I just wish there were decent online stores in Australia. I've tried using JB Hi-Fi and Ezy-DVD, but their sites are badly laid out and not a lot of fun to use.

Why?

If I buy something for $20 at a exchange rate of 1:1.30, I pay 15.38€. At a rate of 1:1.40 I pay 14.29€. That's more than 1€ cheaper.

Additionaly in Germany you pay no customs fee for imports worth less than 22€. That raises the bar from $28.60 to $30.80.
And that can make a real difference:

1:1.30:
Product A: $29.99 = 23.07€ + 3.5% customs fee = 23.88€ + 19% VAT = 28.41€

1:1.40:
Product A: $29.99 = 21.42€

Today the Loonie closed ABOVE the US$for the first time in almost 31 years! woooo!

My annual Black Friday trek is looking like an especially good idea this year.
