| Posted: | | | | When editing Blu-ray profiles, would it be possible that people don't put that a disc is Region Free unless they've confirmed it themselves?
Or, could we come up with a list of sites that people can use?
For example, I use blu-ray.com as a guideline when I'm purchasing from the US. People have to put how they verified the region, so I feel safe importing. To date, I haven't had a single problem.
However, recently, I've bought 2 BDs based on the region coding in the Profiler database. In both cases the discs were Region Locked. This is not necessarily the fault of the contributor. It's probably the site they used to get the information.
I just find our database unreliable for this sort of information; and I'd really like that to NOT be the case.
What does everyone else think? |

| Posted: | | | | I think a list of sites to use for Regions in a good idea. Rory note: I've had this happen to me also. | | | DVD Profiler for iOS as of 3/5/2013 DVD Profiler for Android as of 5/17/2013 | | | Last edited: by rorymatt |

I see that as quite mandatory. Go with the BD-Cover[1] and of course the region of the sale. Everything else only when proven.[2] Now on the matter of reliable sites ... I have mixed feelings about it. I would trust Blue-ray.com for my purposes, but would I trust them enough to put the information in the database? I'd rather err in the way of entering only one 100% right region, than adding "maybes" cya, Mithi [1] Let us keep our fingers crossed that they didn't botched it. [2] Which is the reason why I didn't change a single BD-Region yet, as I don't have the hardware to check. | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | I never liked the way DVDProfiler handled region coding for Blu-ray releases. If you select A,B,C it reverts back to having A,B,C unchecked and is presumed to be region free; why not leave all three checked? Just because all regions are unchecked doesn't mean that it's actually region free. I try to view the contribution notes to see if someone stated whether or not they've confirmed the region coding of a disc. However there isn't always a contribution note explaining why the region coding was contributed the way it was.
I try to check multiple sources when trying to determine a region code before purchasing an international title. Some sources are Blu-ray.com, both the database (you can see who contributed the region coding and any associated notes) and forums, the AVS Forum has an Unofficial Blu-ray Video and Audio Specifications thread which may list the region coding for a title, and sometimes Caps-a-holic also has the region coding assuming they have a comparison profile available.

| Posted: | | | | Regarding regions, I would also like to propose that a box set parent profile's regions should match the discs in the box. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield | | | Last edited: by Danae Cassandra |

I disagree , it should only match the most restrictive disc(s) in the box. I could agree to that. I just think that a box shouldn't be listed as Region 0 when all the discs inside are Region 2 (or whatever region). | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

Unfortunately there is no way to tell if the regions have been intentionally left blank. There should really be a default "undetermined" state for data fields such as this in the program. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

| Posted: | | | | Regions are a nightmare. For Blu-Ray, the only valid way to *correctly* determine them is to use a region switching player, then manually switch the regions to A, B, and C, and see what happens.
Discs can display different content for regions A, B, and C, but still play the main content, in which case, you would have all three boxes (A, B, and C) checked. Or, discs can have no code at all that does anything with regions, in which case the disc is *true* region-free, so all three boxes (A, B, and C) would be unchecked.
The Blu-Ray region is a field that is very important to most users (as it will let them know if they can actually play the disc on their equipment), so it *should* have high standards with regard as to how it is entered in DVD Profiler.
Boxes / covers should *not* be used... many boxes specify "A" for example and are actually A, B, and C, or A and B. Entering "A" just because the box says so when the disc is actually A and B is not user friendly or useful.
There should be some way to deal with this implemented by Invelos, such as a system where users can vote or confirm that a specific disc ID plays in their region specified player. (This is currently what blu-ray.com does.)
Of course, this being the DVD Profiler, I fully expect a multi-page thread stating why the above should not be done. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | I don't touch the regions ever. I don't trust or believe the packaging, Amazon, etc. when it comes to region coding. I do have an region free BD/DVD player, so I don't care too much but everything being equal I'd prefer a Region 1/A disc, or better yet Region free, so I can watch it anywhere. | | | HDTV: 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV545U AVR: Onkyo TR-707 Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 7 v6, CC-190 & Atom Monitors Subwoofer: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 BD/DVD: Oppo BDP-93 (Region Free) HD PVR: Motorola DXC3400 500GB w/ 1TB Expander BD/DVD/Game: 250GB PS3 Slim DVD/Game: 250GB XBox 360 Elite Special Edition (Black) Game: Wii Remote: Logitech Harmony One w/ PS3 Adapter WHS: Acer H341 Windows Home Server |

| Posted: | | | | I think the safest option is that all profiles default to their locality region until such time that someone verifies the disc by putting it into a machine (switchable or not).
I've seen many discs with region A on the cover and in Profiler; but they are actually region free/B also. Now, I've gotten that information from blu-ray.com and taken the risk with ordering. But, once the disc has been received and plays in my region locked player, I will submit the change to Profiler.
So, would everyone agree that unless you've personally verified it all Regions should default to their locality specific? Should we also say that websites, such as blu-ray.com are not a reliable source of verification? |

Ghost (USA) 097361305042 Case: A Profiler: A Blu-ray.com: Confirmed as Region All here: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ghost-Blu-ray/441/#RegionCoding
I bought it and it plays in my region B player without a problem. |

In both cases the disc will be playable in all regions so I don't see making this explicit distinction terribly important. Have you ever found a true ABC region locked disc btw? | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | I came across US locality Blu-ray 2D disc of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, disc ID EB49-6BA5-AC33-C4CA (child profile of the Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray 2D/DVD/Digital Copy combo 024543-826552).
It plays different bonus trailers depending on the player region. Not sure how common this is; I've usually just verified that the disc plays for a particular region and haven't necessarily paid attention to trailers. |

| Posted: | | | | Just my 2p... 100% agree with the original post; I can't be the only one here who 'relies' on data here for buying region free discs (DVD and BD) and feel they should be indicated as locked to their sales region *unless* it's been properly confirmed they are region free/multi-region.
I've observed with BDs it does seem to default to the region of the locality and (asuming my experiences and recollections are correct) people are actually selecting Region Free when often they haven't checked (or been able to check) | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong | | | Last edited: by Voltaire53 |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Voltaire53: Quote: people are actually selecting Region Free when often they haven't checked (or been able to check) This is exactly the case. But, some people are changing region based on various websites. For example, some sites are marketing certain BDs as region free - when in fact they're not. Someone here could use that reputable site as documentation for a change. I think we just need a clear rule on what to do. For example (again!)...Warner Bros. don't region code their BDs. But, is that the case 100% of the time? I don't know. So, is stating that WB don't region code enough for a change? I know I've done this; but now I think about it, I'm not sure I was correct to do so. |
