Hello

I've presently got a contribution up for voting.  As part of this I've offered a change of title.

The DVD is: My Father The Hero
That's exactly how the title is presented on the front cover, in terms of capitalisation.  [683904630223]

What's the correct title in terms of the online database?

(The credit block isn't helpful, as the title is all in capitals and includes a comma too.)

Thanks.

Paul
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

"My Father the Hero"

The rules call for standard capitalization which includes "the" to be written in lower case.

DJ Doena is correct.
The contribution rules explicitly tell us how to handle the word "the" in titles.

Quote (bold by me):
Quote:
For English titles do not capitalize joining words such as "of", "the", "a", "in", etc. unless they are the first, last or only word of the title.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Indeed.  While I don't like it, the rule is quite clear.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.

I agree with the Martian. Mine is "My Father The Hero", like the cover, and locked. If the cover was in all caps, I would use "the" but it's very clearly "The".

Two rules - one contradicts the other.

Copy the cover - violate the capitalization rule.

Follow the capitalization rule - violate the rule to copy the front cover.

No matter what is done - you are right and wrong.

I though the capitalization rule was only for cases when the subject was entirely upper case or lower case?

If that's so, copying the capitalization on the cover is the way to go.

If it was 'MY FATHER THE HERO' you should follow standard capitalization.
If it's 'My Father The Hero' you should use the Title as it appears on the cover.

This was my thought too but I I looked though the rules as well as Ken's clarification thread and couldn't find anything to confirm it. Did I miss it?

The way I always seen it... is all in the bullet point list is a clairfication/exception to the main rule. So while you follow the main rule of "use the title from the front cover" (note it don't say exactly like the overview rule does)... if any circumstances from the bullet point list comes into it we follow what the bullet points tell us to do.

So the title would be My Father the Hero per rules.

Pete has it correct.  While we do use the title from the front cover, we enter it based on the clarifications in the bullet points.

Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

But before that it says

'Check capitalization of the title'

NOT

'Ignore capitalization and go with the contradictory rule below.'

I always took it as a reminder to check the capitalization... as in check the capitalization and apply the correct rule below... since you have different rules for English titles then you do for non-English titles. That is how I always read it anyway.

Being a Non-Native Speaker I miss some of the subtleties of the English language.
But I always thought that there was a difference between "Check" and "Use".
Obviously I am wrong here.
