| Posted: | | | | You are getting hung up on the word 'edition'. Based on the rules, the field isn't only for listing the edition. I is also for listing that which will distinguish one release from another. As long as it does that, what do we care what LucasFilm decided to put on the cover? We enter uncredited despite the fact that the film makers chose to leave them out. I am sorry, but that is a specious argument. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | I don't have any issues with the rule. However, if someone wants to work on changing it, I am more than willing as I don't like 'WS' of 'FS' in my edition fields. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Quoting skipnet50: Quote: Dead Wrong. But as noted the Full Screen Edition is so marked and also uses a banner. So exactly what are you trying to distinguish the WS FROM, that distinction ALREADY exists. Which is probably why Lucasfimm didn't deem it necessary to do it on the WS packaging themselves..
There is absolutely nothing to distinguish from. Since Lucasfilm did not a banner with Widescreen Edition was necessary since they released it on that way on FF version, why do you feel it is necessary to create a fictional Edition that the Distributor did not? This is a simple concept and has been stated several times by myself and others...I don't understand what you aren't understanding. I mean if you really feel you need this then do it locally, but don't invent non-existent data. Skip, This was in response to the question put by pauls42, so I tried to elevate the discussion from that specific title to a general view on what the edition field is used for vs. what the rules indicate. So when you said "Dead wrong", what part of the argument did you object to? Was it "Most users don't seem interested in using this field for distinguishing between DVDs"? Or was it "If that was indeed the intent, then the rule is seriously flawed"? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

I am through with this inannity. Talk about basic flawed logic, but i refuse to say anymore. INVENTING non-existent data is flawed on its face.

I gather that the main purpose of the "Edition" field in DVDP is to distinguish between DVDs, and that's what the Rule tells us, even twice! Of course I understand there can be different points of view, or that someone may want to change that Rule altogether. | | | -- Enry |

For me... Mine was because of gifts... I have several that was given to me out of my friend's collection. She always bought movies used and took whatever they had... if it was full screen so be it... some people just don't care. While cleaning out her collection I ended up with a few from her.
Then there is people like my mother... getting on in age... eye sight not what it used to be... so she prefers to "not have the black bars" as she puts it... because she can see the picture better with full screen.
Yes, if they sell them, there must be someone buying them. After all, it's DVD Profiler, not Widescreen Profiler Quote: As for in the edition field... I prefer it to be there. for one... if I look for a movie by title... I can see which is which at a glance.... also when looking at my collection list to the left side of the program... I can see which I have at a glance so I know what I eventually want to replace or what have you.
it is all for ease of use... so we can tell just by a glance at the list what we have... or what we want to download from the list. That is my opinion at least. I do the same as you do. | | | -- Enry |

Skip How can I be inventing data when I'm not speaking of any specific title? You say my logic is flawed, but you refuse to say what logic and what flaw! I can only conclude that you're still arguing about my earlier posts, not about the post which you commented. I do understand your reasoning re Star Wars I, even if I don't quite agree with it. But as I wrote earlier, I'm ok with agreeing that we disagree. We have now moved on to a broader discussion. Would it be too much to ask that you do the same? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

I could be proved wrong but I haven't seen any full screen dvds for modern films on sale in the UK for more than a year. So I think all the FS dvds are just for the American market. | | | Paul |

For the newest Harry Potter, for example, we got about 50 or so 2-disc editions, 15 or so WS only and about 5 FS editions. We've also received replenishment for the WS only, but the FS, once the initial batch is sold, probably won't be. And I live in a fairly rural area where most people still think that widescreen "cuts off" part of the picture...after all, why else would you have the black bars? lol... But I could easily see FS disappearing fairly soon from the American market as well, if it has already disappeared from the UK. | | | Lori |

As it gets harder and harder for someone to buy a 4x3 TV there will be less demand for 'FullScreen' versions of DVDs. Major stores like Best Buy no longer sell them, so as the old ones die we here in the US will move to 16x9 for all of our media. Most of the bigger LCD displays for computers are now 16x10. I don't think that you can find a 4x3 LCD display that is bigger than 19", but there are lots of 20", 22" and 24" widescreens on sale these days. pdf | | | Paul Francis San Juan Capistrano, CA, USA |

We have a new sueprstore opening here next month on the 15th. I was talking to one of the shift supervisors for the DVD/CD section and asked if they were going to expand the selection of WS titles significantly. She said yes, but also allowed that she has been complaining for months that the stuff they get for the cheapy bin is often the second and third issue full screen stuff that they can't sell any other way. | | | John

pdf I have an absolutely gorgeous Acer 22" WS LCD that I got a couple of months ago for only $207. It replaced a 17" NEC top line CRT model that I paid over $400 for just four years ago. Ain't technology grand? | | | John

When I was young, I could only fantasize about what it must have been like to live in the 1890s, when so many technological inventions were sprouting -- from 1885 to 1910 seemed to be the era when most everything cool began: cars, radio, movies, airplanes... the change over to electricity to power our homes... and many other cool things. But now, at the age of 57, I see that the 1990s were the center of an equally amazing time: cell phones, from home computers to highspeed internet, recoradable DVDs, high definition TVs, satellite media for everyone, GPS units, DVRs, and within 10 years, we'll think of a hundred more. We seem to have eras of tremendous technological creativity: specifically technology which changes people's lives in their homes. the last decade of the 19th century coupled with the first decade of the 20th, now the same two decades of the 20th & 21st centuries. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
