I still think that all they're doing is spelling out 50, so five for 5 and "Oh" for 0(Zero).

On the cover of both the old and the new series DVDs it sure looks like a letter to me.

Really?

I just had a look at the US Blu-ray release.  Looking at the front cover, if you compare the '0' from FIVE-0, to the 'O' in SEASON, they don't look the same.  Looking at the back cover, if you compare the '0' from FIVE-0, to the 'O' in HOTTER, they don't look the same.  That tells me that one is a zero and the other is the letter 'O'.  Since I know the one in HOTTER is a letter, the other has to be a zero.

I was looking at the UK releases. Maybe the US releases look different?

I am not changing mine.
Their so called official site has an O not zero for the earlier series.
As a Sr. Staff Logic Engineer or in programming, I never named signals or part number with an I or O unless it an obvious included in a name not as a part or signal number. Maybe it because I started my computer experience on the UNIVAC I, I had no I or O bay of curcuit chassis bays.

I was so careful about naming conversions, when I did the computer at USAF SAQ, the key punch operator after punching a hundred or so pages of code pointed out to me that I used the wrong register.

Well, glad there's a consensus here...

Anyway, I submitted with a zero (0) to match the first season (of the new series) until there's something more concrete.

I always thought that the Five-0 stood for the fiftieth state.

So I found the quote from the show, it is in Season 1, episode3.  Steve and DAnno walk in on Chin Ho and Kona watching old footage of Steve playing high school football.  Steve is the QB and his number is 50...not normal for a QB.

Danno: I just got one question: What's a quarterback doing with the number fifty?
Steve: No. It's five - oh.
Danno: Yeah.
Steve: NO, it's not fifty, it's five-oh. It's what my dad used to call our family because we weren't native Hawaiians. So he nicknamed us "Five-oh's." After the fiftyth state in the union, I don't know. I guess it was his way of making us feel like we belonged, I guess.
Kono: Hmm. I like that. Five-oh.

Steve's dad, in the show, is a Navy guy so that would explain it as they use 'oh' for zero a lot.  As an example, 0500, which is military time for 5:00 am, is often spoken as oh-five-hundred.

As an aside, the german version of the show is titled Hawaii Fünf-Null, which I believe translates into five zero.  Anyway, take it for what its worth.

That doesn't mean anything. The movie "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" is back-translated "Two Glorious Scoundrels". As you can see, one of the guys got lost in translation.

For whatever it's worth:

This is somewhat analogeus to James Bond's designation when written out. A google searh for "double o seven" yields approximately twice as meny hits as "double 0 seven".

That said, it's a rather moot point. It's what's on the cover that counts. If we could agree to what that is...

I took another look at the cover scans, and I guess I'll have to revise my previous statement.
It looks like a letter on the cover of the new series, but as a number on the cover of the old series.

Guess I'll have to lock the title on all my DVDs of the old show, because I prefer "Hawaii Five-O" which is how all the UK releases are currently listed.

I read somewhere, and I can't quite remember where, that the new series title differed from the original by using a number instead of a letter.

Edit: I remember where I read it...it was a New York Times article.  "The revived “Hawaii Five-0”— with a zero in place of the “O,” perhaps to signal it is version 2.0 — is one of five new series that CBS plans for the 2010-11 season."

Yes, the rules tell us to take the title from the front cover, but if you can't tell whether it is an 'O' or a '0', I see no problem in using a different source to make that determination.  Your mileage, as always, may vary.

Well, if we chose to go by the article then I guess it's Hawaii Five-O for the old series, and that suits me fine. I'm not interested in buying the new series on DVD, so it won't bother me if it's entered as Hawaii Five-0.
(But I still think that it looks like a letter. The digit should be slimmer than the letter, and the character on the cover is very wide, so it's an O to me...)

Looks like a 90° right rotated slim 0, if you ask me.

And an 8 on any cover is just a right rotated infinity symbol.

He,he.
Or do you think "II" is two long -'s rotated? So it should be: HAWA--FIVE-O ?

Or it could be HAWA=FIVE-0 ?

The dash looks like the missing apostrophe from Hawai'i.  It must have slipped down to the second line of the title.
