True, Mark, and I apologize to him for the inference.  However, his attitude makes it hard to be very sympathetic.

I've got no reply to that.

Hmmm.  I wonder how a freeloader who has "zero income" managed to acquire 663 DVDs?  Legally?  Or did he rip THEM off, too?  And he has the nerve to call honest people "a-holes."

If you've been reading all the posts, it sounds like he's picking them up very slowly.  And he's really going after the bargain discs (I believe he says he pays about $4 for his movies).  Plus he says he's been out of work for two years.  It's no stretch to imagine that he amassed most of his collection before his injury.  I don't think it's fair to assume that he's got a collection of pirated material based on what he's told us.

Neither do I - but I can't help but thinking that his back isn't the only bodypart he's injured...

I can hardly count the websites that I've played around with over the years (got my first Internet connection back in '96). At the beginning, they were all free, but over time, 8 out of ten of them started charging for using them - at some of them, it was even impossible to read your own PM's without paying...
So, did I pay? Well, no. I didn't think that the service they provided was actually that important - except one site, and I paid for that - every month for about two years...
Then along came DVD-Profiler. Yes, it did work beautifully in the free version, and no, I wasn't working at that time either. But I really liked the program, and I felt like I just had to pay for it - just to show the author my appreciation. I ended up holding out on a DVD so I could get the money for it (ofcourse, Bush helped - if it wasn't for him, the exchange rate wouldn't have been so low), and paid for it! And when DVDP 3 came, I was ready to pay for it all over again - even if it meant waiting to get a few more DVD's!
I know, emoxley, that it is probably difficult for you to understand, but some of us understand the concept of ShareWare, which DVDP is (and was).
If you go to the supermarket, and a lady is giving out free samples of chocolate (or whatever) and you like it, do you then yell at her for charging you for more chocolate? Or do you yell at the car salesman because he wants you to pay for the car and claim he only let you have that free test drive to get you hooked?
The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet. (William Gibson)

That drug pusher thing is a strawman argument. Drug pushers get you hooked on a free sample so that you get addicted and buy more and more, you know, like a monthly payment plan. DVD Profiler is a one-time purchase.

this thread is awful... with very few exceptions of generosity... this is exactly why a moderator would be better then the pending point system... but i digress... this is just a shame... i agree that this excellent program should be purchased and i regret that ken has spent the recent weeks working on this new points system instead of my profiler plus, i was looking forward to paying invelos again for the fine tool they provide, as it has been almost 5 years since i originally paid $25.

I don't see anything bad from the regular poster here. I don't know but "emoxley" is not really insult by anyone.

You know that in actuality the only thing that costs the monies is:  the logging into the forum , uploading contributions and voting.. Everything else is free....

How  is this??  Cause I have given my code to at least 3 (cheap) friends, and they have no worries about the forum or the voting or the ability to contribute new titles..,, They do not need my password after the program has been installed.  All they want to do is to download more than 50  DVD titles into the program base along with hi res pictures..

I believe I ran a Poll a few months back asking the question .. How many of your DVD friends belong to Invelos and how many don't ? . That questions still stays with me today, as I want these free loader friends of mine to finally figure it out that the options of contribution and voting is what it is really about.  So far they haven't cared .

( I believe that Ken has stated you can have this program on as many computers as you wish as long as it is under your name. )

No that is not the case.  An individual is allowed to run the program on more than one computer (for instance desktop and laptop), but they must be run by the licensee only.  Please do not share your code.

so in other words you have stolen at least) 3 subscriptions from Invelos. Nice going.

IF I was running the company I would charge you the cost of three (at least) more subscriptions.

Do you want to share any more criminal acts with us?

Ken, you can get widescreenforever's code so I suggest you block this and he can buy a new one to use on just his own PC in future.

Say WHAT?!

Do you not understand how purchasing a license works? You do not share your code with anyone

I agree with Pauls42 - Ken should charge you for 3 licenses as you have openly confessed to sharing yours...

time to lock this thread down, and anything between Ken and Terry about the license should be their business, not ours.

Just because you had a bad luck delt to you does not entitle you to have everything in life handed to you on a silver platter.

So, wanting one thing, to stay as it was, makes me want everything served to me on a silver platter? I'd say you were the biggest a-hole of them all!

I've never talked to people online like this before, but you guys brought out the worst in me. I'm not sorry for saying it. I'm sorry for having to say it. And your attention span must not be any longer than a couple of minutes? Remember me saying I have no income? So, how can I pay $10 for a bar code scanner, AND $30 for the software? You need help worse than me!

This is all about priorites.

Obviously, you don't have "no money" as you stated that you are barely getting by on your wife's income, so clearly you have an income, paltry as it may be.

You have made certain choices about the disposition of that income.  One of those choices is apparently to invest in a computer in order to run DVD Profiler.  Another is to have some kind of ISP so that you can get on line and post in this forum.

Those things were apparently important enough for you to spend money on them, although neither would seem to be a "life's necessity".

So the only question that remains (and you seem to have answered it) is whether you are willing to prioritize DVDP high enough to merit paying for it.

This is a simple choice.

To expect to have access to a database maintained by Invelos and to use storage space on their servers to host "your" collection online for free seems to me to be somewhat unrealistic if you can afford to own 650+ DVDs and I presume a DVD player and TV to play them on (more choices about how to priioritize your income).

Instead of lamenting the fact that the unlimited version of the program now costs $29.99, you should be thankful that you got to use the previous version for all of those years totally gratis.  I consider that to have been very generous of the developers of the program.

Widescreenforever made an error in judgment (if he knew it was wrong he wouldn't have told us this). He'll know better in future.

No need to bash him any further.

my very generous calculation is that IVS before the breakup generated no more than $2,000,000 over 7 years, split 6 ways, you call that a living.

I wouldn't, Grendell, and the US Government would brand that as near poverty level for a family of four. I put no ceiling on what a person should be allowed to make,so what somebody believes is a living (to them) is irrelevant.
