I believe people who contribute do follow the rules and do so to the best of their ability.

There are many people who contribute who do neither of those things.

just like a normal community - those who don't contribute just leech off the hard working, wanting everything for nothing and always have  a loud voice when it doesn't go the way they want it.

Generalizations are a lot like statistics.

This has not been my experience. I have voted on over 30,000 contributions and I have voted "no" on a very small percentage of them.

Of the "no" votes I've cast - the vast majority of those were honest mistakes that were fixed and resubmitted.

I have only been a registered member for 7 years so I can not speak about what happened before. But, in the time I've been here, I have never seen "many members" deliberately misled the community.

Off the top of my head I can't think of more than a couple of people who were less than honest in their contributions. And, those people haven't contributed to the database in years.

If your experience is different I suggest you open a support ticket and notify invelos of your concerns. This behavior violates invelos' written policy and disciplinary action is warranted.

I've done that one several occasions, but providing the necessary documentation is a bit tedious and I'm more likely to let it pass these days.

I bet you would, too, eventually.

I've more or less stopped contributing, which is what everyone should do who cannot be bothered to follow the rules.

If someone doesn't understand or feels they can't follow the rules then they shouldn't contribute. Personally I don't believe most people have that problem.

I believe people who contribute do follow the rules and do so to the best of their ability.

At times there are issues that might not be as clear cut as others - the voting process is one way to clarify the matter.

I know one thing that doesn't help clarify issues or help the community - refusing to contribute.

I have no doubt that there are many members who, for whatever reason, don't contribute, and, to use your words, "leech off the hard working". Then there are some who neither contribute nor "leech' anything.

I would have no problem contributing data to the database...heck, I've been contributing data, anonymously at that (so I don't do it for "glory", but because I like to), to this other site for years.

The reason I don't contribute (data) here is not so much not agreeing with the "rules" (although, I don't), but that every single one of my profiles is manually entered...in other words, no UPC, but Manual DVD #3000, Manual DVD # 3001, etc.....so even if I very much wanted to contribute, nothing in my database is contributable (per Invelos rules).
The great thing is I don't get any annoying pop-ups about profile changes / "updates".

Everything in my database is the result of one person's work...mine...from title, to cast, crew, running times, studios, countries of origin, to posters (rarely DVD covers).....one piece of data after another all entered by hand.

I'm not knocking the invelos "rules".... if you're happy with them and they work for you, great. But they are not for me. I want everything in my database to be perfect (to my standards, my "rules" if you will). Not a question of right or wrong here, but of simple choice....of preference.

While I find the Invelos database of no use to me, I have nothing but praise for the software. A steal at 30.00 or whatever it was that I paid for it. After years of cataloging my films on spreadsheets, DVDP (the software) was like a gift from heaven. Would have gladly paid $100-150 for it had it been boxed and on sale at the local store.

No one has to contribute nor should they feel any obligation to do so. I'm sorry if my post made anyone feel otherwise.

What I was trying to get across was that ideas, understanding and clarity increases relative to the number of people who vote and contribute.
