Known Issues

  • The Plugin adds the Name Variants command to the Tools menu of DVD Profiler. If your Tools menu is named differently due to localization, an additional menu with the English name 'Tools' is added to the menu bar. This is a limitation of the DVD Profiler Plugin API.

  • If you set DVDP to English before installing NVCC, that entry will be added to the Tools menu... If you later change again to a different language, the NVCC entry will stay in the localized menu.

This issue does no longer apply anyway. Ken already fixed it in 3.0.3 (IIRC).

    Matthias,
Is it possible to intergrate Andy's & James' common name database into the search results?

It would be awesome if amongst the local variant results it displayed, the entry or close matches from there also appear.

Once I delete the "cast as" part, the colours are back again.

You shouldn't do that, at least not when planning to contribute the data. The difference between credited name and common name is meaningful information.

but would it be possible not to save the old name in the "cast as" field? Could it be made as a choice to the user when launching the report?

No, this is decidedly not an option, for the reason given above.

After a long time, I figured I'd try again

I am still looking for a plugin that will help me cleaning my db of wrong entries, and this one still seems to be the One... if it would just give me the choice to correct the names without writing a wrong one in the credited as.

Although you are right and the difference between credited name and common name is meaningful information, I guess it is only worse to input an incorrect name in the "credited as" field, isn't it?
For the moment, if I correct a name via your plugin because it is mispelled, the mispelled version will go into the "credited as" field, although it was just a correction.

    Hi goodguy,

is it possible that you include a selection of your own defined TAGs in the report.

I do Tag which data I did compare with the disc, so it would make it easier in some cases to decide if a change should be done or not.

so I started using this plugin tonight for the first time, works great only I have some questions to make sure Im using it properly.
First what exactly does this mean Exclude Incorrect Name Variants, when I try to use it says I need an exclusion file? I guess what Im getting at is if I have a name that seems common but is actually two differant people how do I get it to not include them in a new report? For instance I believe Adam Taylor and Adam Taylor Gordon are two differant people but everytime I make a report they both come up.

You have to specify an exclusion file before creating the report. Once you have done that, you can use the Exclude commands to prevent variants such as the one you mentioned from appearing again.

See the ReadMe for more info on how exclusions work.

Just click on the Browse button, then click on Open, and let it create the NVExclude.xml file.

Any chance, in the next version, you could include the Role information for the actor. I have lot of TV box sets and noticed odd typos in character information that cut across multiple discs/seasons. Also there are some cases where the same actor plays different characters (animation, animatronics and heavily made up aliens for example).

    Any hoo just a thought..

A couple of wishes from me:

    1. Ability to de-select a role from within the selected common name. Right now, you can deselect roles from names that aren't chosen as the common name, but I would like to be able to exclude roles from the chosen name as well. This comes up with there are multiple individuals with one name and things are merged in the existing data.

    2. Ability to add any figure to the birth year. DVDP allows any 4-digit number whereas the plugin allows only valid years. I use my own numbering system for actors for whom I can't find a birth year.

    3. Ability to add birth years to any name. Right now we can only add them to new common names, but I would like to add them to existing names that I choose as the common name and even names that I don't choose as the common name.

Thanks again for this plugin. I use it...alot.

Great plugin, it really is excellent. However, it just shows how many errors there are in the database.

I've found the most common errors are middle names and accents in names. While I want to go through my database and correct as many as I can without being able to find definitive proof whether the accent should be there or not, or that Adrian Ricard and Adrian L. Ricard are the same person, you can't upload it.

So while you can get your database a lot tidier and get the cast linking working better the problem in the main db remains.

Yes, that sums up the situation nicely.

edit:  Nevermind. I found the following thread with the solution:

Leaving the original contents of this post in case someone else have the same problem.

When I try to install this plugin I get the following error:

The module "NVPlugin.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80020009.

I unpacked zip file in its own directory (the exact path is C:\Users\KM\Documents\DVD Profiler\Plugins\Install Files\Name_Variants) and that error comes up when I double-click install.cmd.

I am running Vista Home Premium and DVD Profiler 3.1.1.1, build 1171. It's a five day old Vista install.

    The install requires admin rights.

Open a command prompt as administrator, switch to the directory containing all the unzipped files, then type "regsvr32 nvplugin.dll" (without the quotes).

Please also note that the install procedure does NOT copy any files, it simply registers the plugin. The files you unzipped to a DEDICATED folder of your choice are the actual program files (Just saying, because you named your folder "install files").
