So,

How would you like to see Ms. Cruz listed?

    Penélope Cruz ?

    Penelope Cruz ?

Penélope Cruz is her name and most of the films I have currently have her credited this way. But Penelope is simpler to enter. This is a bigger deal to people that have lots of non-US films where accents are far more common. In my collection I have lots of Spanish and French language films where this is an issue.

I don't think that we are ready for a poll yet, but we should start to talk about it.

I am adding accents to all "Common Names" in my local database.

That way, I only have to input it with the accent one time.  If she is credited as Penelope, without the accent, its easy to enter in the "as credited" field.

Penélope Cruz

Of course. Since this is the most common she is credited as. Actually I have never seen her been credited without the accent.
But then again, I haven't seen all the movies she appears in.

Atleast to me this make sense.

Penélope Cruz

If any name ever has an accent, I'm using that in the common name since that appears to be their real name.

Even though I fully agree with you, this approach could easily be in conflict with purported plans to use the most often used "as credited" name in the main db as the "Common Name".

I know. It's just what I'm doing for my local.

After what I saw last night when I looked at my data, if we allow people to choose the best common name, it may take us a couple of tries to get them right as we all settle into what's "best".

If we let a database tell us what to pick as the common name, I think our data's going to look like garbage. If the rule ends up telling me I have to use Penelope Cruz, I might not contribute.

I think I'd rather have correct data in my local than have consistently incorrect data so that I can contribute.

I don't know for sure. We'll see where we are when we get there.
