There seems to be a conflict in the "Titles" rules. The very first thing the rules say are "Use the title from the film's credits." I always took this to mean exactly what your eyeballs see on the screen.

However, with the "modified titles" rule:

Quote:
  • Modified Titles: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.  For instance, for the Special Edition rerelease of There's Something About Mary:

  •     - Title: There's Something More About Mary
        - Original Title: There's Something About Mary

It appears since the move to Invelos that everyone is now interpreting this to mean that the title as listed on the DVD cover now always goes in the "Title" field, while what your eyeballs see on the screen now always goes in the "Original Title" field.

For example, Title: "Déjà Vu" / Original Title: "Deja Vu". ("Déjà Vu" is listed on the DVD Cover, but the on-screen credits don't have the accents, it simply says "Deja Vu".)

The problem I see with this is what about a case where a film premiered in a specific country, was released on DVD in another country with a different title, and has some kind of variation (with characters with accents, etc.) between the DVD cover and the on-screen title?

(I don't currently have a specific title as an example, it's a hypothetical question, but I'm sure there are bound to be titles like this.)
99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."

Hasn't been since the move to Invelos, as far as I'm aware it has been going on for quite some time. Not sure how those outside of the US are handling title variations.

i've even seen some instances where the title is repeated verbatim in both the title and original title fields...

some folks just can't stand an empty field.

that's why there are so many houses...

    and original titles...

i refuse to go near the accent issue...i'm originally from ohio and have fought that twang for years...

I don't think this is technically possible.

Typically for region 2 you will have the local (what the cover says) title in the title field and the original (film credits title) in the original title field. I've never seen a case where this causes a conflict, yet...

That's the same case with the Mission: Impossible DVDs. M:I-II versus Mission: Impossible II

I guess Ken should clarify the conflict in the rules.

Yes, there was a huge discussion about this when it came out and overall this was accepted as the correct way

well we seem to have managed until now... though there is a potential for trouble with "foreign" film translations
