I've noticed on some movies and tv series that occasionally an actor would use another name for themselves in the credits. Do we list their real name or the name they go by in the credits. For example, on "Welcome Back Kotter," actor Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs goes by Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs. Which one do we use?

Thanks.

Whatever is in the credits.

Now... let the arguing commence.

Unless you can provide supporting documentation that his common name IS Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and NOT Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs as credited, then you are required to use what is in the credits. If you do provide supporting documentation that his common name IS Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs then you would use the "credited as" feature so that his common name is Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs credited as [Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs].

The way it used to be done (before version 3.0) was to use whatever you see on the screen. No questions asked.

Now there is a "credited as" feature designed to link the actors with one common name yet keeping the name you see on the screen by using the credited as feature.

Check the rules for more information.

Beware, it IS a topic that is heavily debated. But how can anyone argue with Kermit the Frog

My short answer is "Use the credits" unless you are sure (with good evidience) that the "Credited as" field can be used

Now, what that good evidence might be? I have no idea - good luck and "if in doubt, post without" (the credited as info)

Thanks for telling about the "credited as" feature. I guess I just got used to the old 2.0 program. Also you don't want to mess with the frog.

I know there's not a lot we can use IMDb for but would it be a valid source to quote for the credited as feature and if not what would be.

If I remember correctly... Ken has said he did not want them used for the as credited field either.. said this in another thread but forget which one... thinking maybe it was in the rules committee forum.

I personally am in the wait for Ken group. He is supposed to have something in the works to look at our database for the most used credited form of everyones name. When that will be implemented.. or if that is even still on track... I have no idea.

So for now it is probably best not to use the "credited as" and just use the name from the credits as it will be quite difficult to validate it.

In my opinion... yes it is best to wait. but that is debated on these forums all the time... so not everyone agrees. As per the rules it is allowed to be used now if you can document/source it.

You leave me no option but to respond to your no vote on my contribution for Welcome Back Kotter: The Complete First Season UPC# 085391130994 here since for some unknown reason you immediately blocked PMs from me after voting no, which in my opinion is a chicken$h$% thing to do .

The reason you provided for your no vote makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever.  You state, and I quote, "It's John/Sylvester/White NOT John/Sylvester White."

Take another look at my contribution and you will clearly see that John Sylvester White is properly parsed as John/Sylvester/White and not John/Sylvester white as you state in your decline. On the other hand, your contribution is in error as you have John Sylvester White improperly parsed as John/Sylvester White. You have also used "credited as" for Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs without any supporting documentation.

This is rediculous .

I agree with you, Pete, about waiting for Ken to come up with THE solution to the common form problem.  Until there is a solution, I will continue to enter the name from the DVD/movie credits.  When that solution is here, I will use that great Name Variants plug-in to highlight those names that I'll need to change.

[I consider the Name Variants plug-in to be of marginal use to me at the present time, since I end up with several similar names but I don't know which to use as "common."]
Another Ken (not Ken Cole)
