Yeah!!!!

I run Ubuntu (Feisty). This morning I successfully installed DVD Profiler 3.1 and imported a backup of my database.

On Feisty I had already used Automatix to install Wine and it looks like gecko was installed as part of that process. So all I needed to do was download Tahoma.ttf to the correct location and use 'wine regedit' to install it. However regedit steadfastly refused to allow me to add a new StringValue. New Keys were OK but not new StringValues so I'm not sure whether it was a security problem (I did try running wine under sudo but still no difference). Anyway I was able to edit existing keys so I choose a font with an arabic sounding name (which I almost certainly will never need), renamed it to Tahoma and edited it to point ot Tahoma.ttf and all is working.

Thanks for the help here.

Wine has just come out with a new version (0.9.47), which includes some form of Tahoma fix. However, what's been happening for me is that despite the font now existing in the registry, I still get the errors when starting DVD Profier from a fresh install. Copying the tahoma.ttf file into the fonts folder (as described) is also not working.

A word of warning. Until I can figure out what's in g on (and possibly wine implement a fix), you may have to be a little more sneaky to perform the installation (e.g. delete the tahoma registry entry and then reenter it again). If you can work around this new problem, DVD Profiler still works.

When I upgraded wine from 0.9.45 to 0.9.46 on my Macbook Pro, DVDProfiler stopped working (lots of floating point errors that I couldn't dismiss).
When I upgraded wine to 0.9.47, it went back to working for me.

Just another data point ...

I just get this error repeated a bunch of times starting 3.1.1 (Build 1171):

fixme:seh:set_cpu_context setting partial context (13) not supported

edit: looks like I am running a pretty old version of wine (.9.33). I'm in the process of downloading the ubuntu 7.10 upgrade, I think that will upgrade wine to at least .9.46.

Version 0.9.46 does work, but if you're installing anyway I'd go for the latest version as ya_shin points out. Make sure that you delete the "/home/[user]/.wine" directory before you try again to make sure that the attempt isn't corrupted by old 0.9.33 settings.

New versions come out roughly once every two weeks. I'll post here again when a new version results in an improvement in functionality (although I doubt that there will be one for a while), but most builds that are around 0.9.40+ all behave the same at the moment.

After upgrading wine (just to 0.9.46 for now as that is the latest in the standard/supported ubuntu repository) 3.1.1 is working. The only issue I'm having so far is the html window editor is really buggy.

I've played with the html a little, but as I don't use it I couldn't test it properly. Can you give an example of how it's playing up?

Hey Stuart

Thank you for an excellent little tut. on getting Profiler to work on Linux!

It runs quite well in PCLinuxOS (PCLOS)

Currently running wine 0.9.5.0
Could not edit profiles until I added riched20 to the DLL overrides in wine configurator.

My only complaint about Profiler under Linux is the inability to view contribution notes from the view contributors window. But I suspect that has something to do with Profiler looking for MS Internet Explorer (This also happened in XP when I uninstalled IE as I was using Firefox. I have tried to install IE under wine but so far no luck.

I would be interested in which Distros ppl have managed to get Profiler to work in.

Keep up the good work.

That's odd, because I can both edit profiles and view contribution notes. I wonder if you've not got Gecko to install correctly (Gecko seems to cause everyone problems)?

There is a way to get some from of IE installed, but it's not the standard MS version (if you've not come across that little problem yet).

If you've got the time, it would be really helpful for you (and others) to confirm (or otherwise) the open bug reports and add any more you find - as an app it seems to have disappeared under the Wine developer's radar and a couple of bug confirmations might get it noticed and some more fixes in.

Has anybody had any trouble with  v3.1.1 Build 1171 ?

I found this thread and couldn't wait to give it a try.

The install seemed to go amazingly smoothly  thanks to DariusKyrak's fantastic instructions. However, when I launch DVDProfiler it freezes at the splash screen when half the DVDProfiler Eye graphic is in colour (see screenshot)

Fedora 2.6.23.12-52.fc7
Wine 0.9.52

OK I tried running the Database Repair Utility and now the splash screen gets much further, with just a slither of black and white left.

Just for giggles, I started mashing the Esc key while the splash screen is doing it's thing and found that get's me in!

Obviously not the best workaround in the world but it's a start.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

It's almost certainly a Gecko issue. If you don't install Gecko, the program can stop loading at exactly the point your image shows. First, check what happens when you run "Wine iexplore http://www.Winehq.org". If Gecko's installed correctly, it should open a page to winehq.org. If not, it will probably try to install Gecko.

Failing that, see if you can move the splash screen to see if there is an error message underneath it. I don't know how you do this is Gnome, but in KDE holding down the Ctrl key allows you to move it, or choosing the 'move' option by right clicking on the program in the control panel.

See where that gets you.

Bingo! that go it.
Gecko was moaning about installing again.
All working now.

Thanks!

Thought I'd let everyone know I made the first post in this thread into a Wiki entry. If there are future updates to it I'll try to remember to modify the Wiki entry, but other should feel free to do so if I miss it.

Excellent. I was planning on doing that myself but I was having problems logging on when I tried a few weeks ago. I'll probably add all the funkiness that I couldn't add here (like pics and stuff).
