Genre - kind, category or sort, especially of literary or artistic work.*

Classic -    i.  of the highest class, especially in art or literature
ii.    serving as a standard or model of its kind; definitive.
iii.  of lasting interest or significance.*

*(Collins English dictionary)

Wouldn't every film/TV show/etc. which is on DVD be considered "...of lasting interest or significance..."? If it carried no interest, why make and sell a DVD of it?

I think the operative words in that particular definition are 'lasting' and 'significant.'  Converting a
TV show or film to dvd is merely a marketing tool; it does not guarantee quality. I think it would
have to include one or both of the other criteria as well.

I think most of us would agree that what Profiler tracks as a "genre" doesn't meet the traditiional definition of "genre."  Maybe Ken could call it something else other than genre, but that horse has lbeen out of the barn too long to fix now, IMO.

When I'm auditing a profile and want to contribute it, I usually leave the existing genres alone, even if I disagree with them.  I'll fix my local to agree with my own view of what's correct and leave the online profile alone.

Two exceptions:  (1) If one or more of the genres in the online profile are blank and I strongly believe a genre is missing -- I'll add it without deleting any of the existing ones.  (2) If one of the existing genres is something I feel is totally wrong (e.g., if someone tried to call Taxi Driver a comedy) I'd try to change it in the online profile.

One of the few times I wasn't asleep in English class in high school, I learned that in the traditional drama, it ended badly for the protagonist -- and in a comedy it ended happily, much like what the link Enry Wiki mentioned said.
Another Ken (not Ken Cole)

That is my procedure as well, Ken. I have seen very few Genre entries which could be called blatantly incorrect, some, but probably not much more than a handful. I want MY genre, MY way, but if the Online has a different order or a different but correct set then its fine. I haven't yet figured out the motive for those that feel re-oredering Genre is the correct thing to do. What is important is how MY data is dealt with in all respects, beyond its starting point function the Online is not relevant.
