I finally go around to seeing Avatar...went last night after the Oscars...and thought it was well worth the price of admission.  With that added to the list, I have seen 6 of the 10 nominations.  Of those 6, The Hurt Locker would not have been my choice as Best Picture.

My ranking, of the 6 I have seen, would be:
  • Avatar

  • District 9

  • Up

  • The Blind Side

  • Inglourious Basterds

  • The Hurt Locker
  • No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

    Talking about overhyped ...

The only bearable performance I could find in this movie was Christoph Walz's.
The rest was totally far below their usual standards (Esp. Tarantino and Pitt)
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I know why they created an animation category but I think it will always prevent films like Up from winning Best Picture.

Personally, I like District 9 best, but that doesn't mean I disagree with the academy's choice. It was probably well deserved.

Of the 8 nominees I saw, my rankings are as follows:

    Inglorious Basterds
    Up
    Avatar
    District 9
    Up in the Air
    The Blind Side
    The Hurt Locker
    Precious

The top 3 are very close in rank, and I keep changing the order in my head, but as of this nanosecond that is how they sit.

Maybe Cameron getting owned by his ex wife might get him off his high horse and start putting his talent towards something more credible and down to earth.

This is the guy that made T1 and T2 ppl.

I haven't seen any of the ten films, so I don't disagree.

Neither have I, but I disagree, just on principle.

I'm not sure if I cared who won.  I will say that the Avatar story already won best picture some years ago when it was called Dances with Wolves, so no need to go there again.  Did anyone else read that article suggesting that Avatar basically had no chance because the voters are actors and actors still prefer real people on real sets?

    ??

You realize they were married for like 2 years 20 years ago, right? And they are still good friends, so "owned" is an irrelevant term.

Either way, do you honestly think Cameron cares? The dude is probably a gajillioniare by now, and Avatar will probably bust a billion dollars. Pretty sure he doesn't care what the naysayers are saying.

I'm glad she won the Oscar, as well as Hurt Locker. Both were deserving.

I haven't seen "The Hurt Locker" yet, too much work and too little time to spend before the home screen, so I can't tell if "Avatar" (seen already and loved it) or the winner are better suited.

"Inglorious Basterds" however is in no way a "Best Picture" winner, at least not in comparison to some of the other nominees. Tarantino has proven several times he can do seriously better than he did here, and if it weren't for Christoph Waltz, this movie wouldn't even have made the nominee list I'm sure. It's not a bad movie, don't get me wrong, it's enjoyable and has it's moments (Pitt's speech is hilarious) but so did the first three Rambo installments, and no one thought about nominating them for Best Picture (and rightfully so).

Box Office does not equal Oscar. Avatar was a very interestinand well prtrayed story. It deserved the nomination, it did not deserve the Award. I think the right film won.

I'd described it as Dances with Aliens to a number of people since i saw it.  Someone told me last week they'd been describing it as Dances with Smurfs.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!
