Unable to share my collection

I bought DVD Profiler's iPhone App and I have followed all the instructions but, even with the firewall disabled, I get the "Unable to connect." error message. I can't configure the router because it is the one given by the internet provider (Fastweb, in Italy). Any suggestions ??

I thought that the problem might be that my internet service provider doesn't offer the possibility to have a "public IP address". Could that be the problem ? Could it be solved by putting DVD Profiler's collection on the internet (like google docs) ?

Try with another port. Some providers do not allow high ports in the 30000 and higher like the one of DVD Profiler is. Give it f.e. 8080 in DVD Profiler and open the firewall for port 8080.

Are you sure that you can't configure your router ? It shouldn't make a difference if you bought it yourself or got it from your provider.

Are you trying to connect using the computer name or the IP adress ? I had no luck with the name but it worked fine with the IP.

I'm having the same problem. I turned off the Windows firewall and the message "Unable to Connect" continues. It's frustrating to pay for an app that expensive and you can not use it for connection problems. There should be another way to transfer data, even if it was through physical connection (wire).

I agree with jcvasc.
I am sure that I can't configure my router, it is absolutely locked. I am also sure that my internet service provider doesn't offer a public IP, and I think that this feature can cause the problem I am having. I hope I will get an answer from Invelos' developers.

Afaik you must have an ip address... Go to

http://www.whatismyip.com/

Use the ip it gives you and as others suggested change to port 8080

Wait, are you trying to connect to your router at home from outside? That's the only scenario you would need a "public IP address", i.e. a static IP instead of a dynamic one (which is assigned every time the router establishes a new connection).

1) If you want to connect from outside your (W)LAN and you don't have a static IP, use a free dynamic DNS service (e.g. DynDNS.org or No-IP.com). But that only works, if you have access to the settings of your router and can add a port-forwarding to the machine DVD Profiler Desktop is running on.

2) If you are at home and the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad has connection to the internet through your router, your desktop PC already has an IP address. Not a piblic one of course, since all devices are in the same local network = (W)LAN.
If you don't know the IP for the machine on which DVDP is running, press Win+R, type cmd , type ipconfig  and look for the IP address (most likely 192.168.something.something). Share your collection on port 80 (that's also used for standard HTTP connections, so if you can surf, it's most likely completely open).

If your router is really locked down by your provider and WLAN stations are separated from LAN stations by default, you won't be able to establish a connection at all. But honestly, even if you have hardware provided or subsidized by your ISP, it shouldn't be completely locked. That's not a sign of a good provider, IMHO.

I've posted some more trouble shooting questions here, please have a look at these, too.

The problem is that Apple doesn't allow third-party apps/software to connect through the Apple Dock Connector (only iTunes and iOS are allowed to communicate over it).

So, the only alternative to wireless connections (3G & WiFi) is the file transfer introduced by iTunes 10. That's not a direct communication, though. And it would require an export/import function. Maybe Ken will implement that in a future version...

My router is 100% locked and my internet service provider uses a "particular" way to connect the users to the internet.
We (users paying 120$ a month !!) have 2 IP addresses, one that is visible "inside" the ISP's network, and another (the one we use to go on the internet) is the same for all the subscribers: we get access to the internet through a NAT. It is a very fast connection, but for example, we have problems hosting a game.

Most of the time I have exactly the same problem - DVDprofiler says that it's "Shared on 'electra' (192.168.3.122), port 32847, 0 connected" and the ipod says it's on 192.168.3.124 - both machines have subnet masks of 225.225.225.0 wit the router and DNS address address as 192.168.3.1 - the database (~1000 DVD's) is not password protected.

Most of the time the two machines refuse to connect - every now and then they will connect and transfer data for a while but never long enough to transfer the DVD collection over.  When it's done this it will usually it will get as far as "Copying Images" before it quits.

It makes no difference if the Windows Firewall is on or off.  The windows PC can see all the other machines on the network except the ipod - but then Ios isn't an SMB device so that's to be expected.

Changing the shared port to port 80 doesn't change anything.

Occasionally the ipad will show the message "Unable to Connect" grayed out while the "Connecting" dialog is still active at the bottom of the screen.

recursive, have you tried connecting to your computer from the iPad using other means?  One simple method is to setup a VNC server and run a client on the iPad and see how stable the connection is.

guybrush79, unfortunately if you search on "fastweb italy port forwarding" on Google you'll find hundreds of people posting similar messages.  I recommend you contact your ISP and ask them.

Looking at the issues some people are having sharing collection, I think the method may need to be revisited. I can connect at home with no problem but can never connect from my office, even with all firewall disabled. Since this is an essential part of DVD Profiler seeing that the iOS app is not yet completely independent of the desktop, the sharing/sync should be made easier for everyone.

I have apps that connects to my desktop via wifi and never had this issue. I just key in the ip address provided by the app and it appears on my desktop, PC or Mac so I hope this can be just as simple. Just my 2 cents though I am relieved I finally could succesfully share my collection.
