I just got an Inspiron 531 with the intention of using it as a home theater PC. I bought a new video card installed it, went to hook it up and ran into a problem.

The HDMI port is right at the top edge of the card. There's a metal lip right above the slot. This is my only PCI-E 16 slot. I can't actually fit the HDMI connector in there. Can anyone recommend a cable where the plastic only sticks out a hair past the connector or do I need to break out the tin snips?

A single slot video card?  It may not be powerful enough if you planned on watching HD content.  But that said, loosen up the screw holding the card in place an try tilting it a little to increase the clearance.

Tried that. It can't be done. I couldn't get the connector in even with the plate that holds the cards in place off.

The days when you needed a huge, expensive video card to be able to watch HD video ended 2 or 3 years ago. It's a Radeon HD 5450, which is the low-end card, but should be able to do anything 2D you can throw at it.
