Anyone know if it is possible to see somewhere (local or online) the number of downloads for a specific profile ? Or how many that have the given profile in their online collection. Sometimes I wonder how many is actually using some rare profiles that I have contributed.

Me neither; I believe some of the old Intervocative stats had 'top profiles', or was that a third party database? But Invelos doesn't have the stats available to us and the third party is, I believe, long gone or at least no longer updated... I'm willing to be corrected.

Number of downloads wouldn't be very useful, IMO, because there's no way of knowing if the profile is still in the collection to which it was downloaded.  What would be more meaningful, and easy to do I think, would be to show how many online collections have the given profile--or even the given title.  Some have objected to this in the past for privacy concerns, but if one's collection is online it is already "in the open," as it were.

Personally, I'm interested in knowing what percentage of the community owns a particular title and the specific user doesn't need to be published which would, IMO, satisfy any privacy concerns.

My personal assessment would be that there's a two-sided slide.

One slide is locality, the other is the blockbuster factor.

I'd say the most used profiles are blockbuster movies sold in the US.

As far as localities go. I'd say the UK and then Germany are probably the runner-ups, followed by other english-seaking countries like Canada and Australia (because let's face it, this site is targeted at english speaking people and Germany is just up there because it has so many citizens of which some are bound to be obsessed with movies).

The other slide goes from friggin' blockbuster everyone has seen to fancy arthouse movies and other various obscure stuff.

My guess would also be that both sides of the slide are not inclined planes but rather exponential twowards both ends (The number of users that have one particular profile is probably similar to the number of profiles that is used by only one user).

One could make the case that the DVD Profiler Community is a reasonable and proper statistical sample of the general population of DVD purchasers. If that is true, the distribution of sales in the general population would yield the same information, so there would be no need to capture specific information from the Community.

If you make the opposite case - that somehow the DVDP Community is different in some fundamental way, then you would in fact need to gather Community-based statistics.

The third case: You want to capture that information in order to determine whether in fact this Community is different, then that might be a valid study, and I would bet that the marketing arm of Invelos has done such a study already.

Now would that be Ken's or Gerri's arm, left or right?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

To be honest, I can't understand movie companies at all. other then the idea that they think they are Gods and do things their own way and expect everyone to follow their ideas/methods or be ignored or called a pirate or worse.

If I owned a movie company I would be pushing out information to groups like us DVDProfiler users. Especially when they drag out old movies they finally decide to put on dvd/br, or even new releases - it can only increase their sales. I don't know how many movies I have bought recently (and I've bought over 70 in the last 2 months) that are simply by chance due to me being interested in compiling a database list of what I own. There are quite a few I now have that I had never even heard of and most probably would not of seen browsing the dvd shop. It's only my new found "collector" interest that has brought these movies into my field of vision.

The media companies practically have a captive audience when it comes to us and the best we can be described as, as a group, is "Ignored".

Hmm that was a little off topic wasn't it? Anyway, me too! I'm a statistics lover and would like to see info on the titles in the database. I know of one where there's only one person with it - me! Cause i did the contrib and was immensely surprised the movie wasn't already in the db from somewhere - consider here in Australia we generally get release later than the USA etc.
