Why was a contribution approved that was in direct violation of the contribution rules?

A profile contribution was recently submitted for the television series Crashing UPC 883929595952.  The contributor submitted several valid data elements, but also submitted an update to the overview that deleted the existing overview and instead replaced it with just a list of episodes.  A list of episodes is permitted by the rules, but the contributor should not have deleted the remainder of the overview in doing so.  So, I voted no, noting that my only objection was the change to the overview.  The existing overview was proper and should not have been deleted. Nevertheless, the contribution was approved.

I don't understand this at all, and it's really frustrating that the contribution rules seem to arbitrarily enforced, or not enforced at all as the case may be here. I would think that a no vote would at least prompt whoever it is that determines whether to approve contributions to look at the contribution.

I think everyone here understands your frustration when valid data is overwritten by a new contribution. But it happens from time to time. It would be interesting to know whether there where several yes votes for this contribution. If so, I think, an approval despite removing valid data is always likely.

Besides that: not all contributors look at the feedback of their contributions. So they don’t see mistakes others have found. Sometimes a PM is more useful than a no vote when it comes to ambiguities concerning a contribution.
Think different

Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.

Was there a reason for removal of the overview in the notes? Was the overview from the back cover of the set? While a self written spoiler free overview is allowed by the rules it has been my experience that not everyone realizes this and will contribute and vote for as you have said.

No reason was given for the removal, in fact the entire contribution notes consisted of "Completed with my own edition".

Yes, the overview was from the cover.

I would just resubmit with the overview and the episode list. Don't remove the episode list as that would be a valid reason to vote no if they wanted to.

Thanks for the advice.  The overview was valid, and it was an overview (not a tagline or a review).  I know because I added it less than a week before it was overwritten.  Greyghost has re-added it.  I'm just frustrated and it makes me more inclined not to waste my time adding information to profiles.  I have a really large collection and have seen a lot of updates over the years.  Sadly, this really isn't that rare of an occurrence.

I very rarely vote "no" to profile contributions, as I know we're all just trying to improve the database. I feel as though I've screwed up if I get no votes to my contributions, so I'll generally withdraw and re-submit trying to address whatever concerns were raised.  I just wish the system worked better.

I have had cases where DVD Profiler has downloaded an incomplete profile, so when I go to contribute, information is missing on my end, but there in the on-line database. I don't know what causes it, but I have had it happen. Most recently I was working on a double feature for Kill Bill. I simply fixed the title and edition, but when I went to submit it showed me that there were child profiles (Which would have been next on my list of edits). I cancelled the submission, removed and readded it to my collection, then it downloaded the child profiles. I wonder if other metadata can be affected in a similar fashion.
