The Release date is usually the date it is up for sale in shops. Although, sometimes DVDs and Blu-rays can be exclusively sold elsewhere before a general release.

We use the earliest date of release for the barcode in question.

I know that Best Buy and I think Walmart released some movies on blu-ray months before the general release. They had exclusive rights for a short period of time, no other store could sell it until they lost the exclusive rights.

Now some would say that the general release date should be it. Some would say that it's the exclusive release date.

I would have to agree with GreyHulk, the exclusive release date is what should be entered.
