News today puts Blockbuster Video on the ropes..

The day is rapidly approaching where all home video, new releases and old  will be electronically downloaded.. ,.

I'm not sure the end of physical product will be that rapid.  Blockbuster just cannot compete with Redbox's $1 rentals and Netflix's low monthly membership fees.  I think it's mostly Redbox, though.  Those things have multiplied like rabbits in my area, from one machine last year to six now (and those are the ones I've seen, there may be others).  Every grocery store has one now.  Why make an extra stop at Blockbuster when you can buy bread, milk, and rent a $1 DVD at the same place?

High overhead for prime location commercial real estate and $5/night rental fees are what's killing Blockbuster.  I cheered a little when Movie Gallery recently closed their local store, but I'll be a little sorry to see Blockbuster go.  I love their pre-viewed DVD deals (especially the 4 for $20 sales).

It will be interesting to watch. I think if i were Blockbuster I would have probably killed the Brick & Mortar stores long ago and concentrated in aggressive Online against Netflix. That may be what they still do...but i think Netflix has to big an edge now.

Lackluster can go. Now if Hollywood Video was to leave that would hurt.

The only rental store that seems to be surviving decently around here is our local shop.  I'm not sorry to see Blockbuster go, and most of our Hollywood Videos are gone too.  I don't think Redbox will kill out local shop though. since they specialize in horror, cult and foreign films, and every Redbox I've seen is totally mainstream.  That's the problem with Blockbuster & Hollywood - they're both thoroughly mainstream, so when something came along that did the exact same thing cheaper, of course people went with that.  They had no niche, nothing to fall back on when the bottom fell out.  Netflix is the only thing I'd worry about if I ran out local shop, since they have such a vast catalog - but I'm not even sure if I'd worry then, since you can't exactly get something the minute you're like, 'omg, I remember that, I want to see that now.'  As I've understood Netflix, there's a wait of more than just postal time (correct me if I'm wrong).
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Netflix now streams a large collection of their movies and TV series OTA.  You already have support if you have any unlimited Netflix account plus Internet Explorer.  TiVo series 3 also allows you to view their video-on-demand.  The available movies/shows are small but growing each day.  My son and I have been watching Sliders & Star Trek: TOS using it, I've been watching the Hercules series, and I have quite a few movies in my queue waiting.

Funny... a few months ago Blockbuster teamed up with Video Ezy here to buy out Ezy DVD when they went into receivership. Apparently they wanted to expand their retail arm. Then again, US/Australian arms may be operating independently of one another.
