As long as our local database won't recognize upper/lower case we are always going to have some of our databases with

    (1) Jan de Bont [Jan De Bont] and others of us will have it

    (2) Jan De Bont [Jan de Bont].

Until Ken says the correct "variant" is (1) or revised the program to recognize upper/lower case, we will have people forever uploading (1) or (2) based on what's in their local database.

I agree with that completely, and I have obviously never claimed otherwise. There's plenty of work for Ken to do on the subject, but that should NOT include adding the ability to have co-existing yet separate entries for both Jan de Bont and Jan De Bont in our local databases. That won't help at all, and will even make things worse.

Very wrong and you presume to know things aboput the Program that you can't possiby know...hmm kind of reminds me about your ideas about the Rules, Tim. It's a BUG, plai and simple, we are to enter the data as it exists On Screen not according to your interpretation of the data, in some movies a given actor or crew may be credited De or de, both are valid entries. This has nothing to do with any sort of protection, local or otherwise, it is simply a bug. Protection of local data is your responsibility.

How is he credited in the END credits ?

Because Invelos' prefered source is the End credits first and the spelling could be different between the Opening and the End credits.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the director's credit isn't repeated in the end credits.

Oops, Northbloke already answered this one

Wrong on all counts again, Skip. Luckily, I fully trust that Ken DOES understand this issue, so I'm not worried at all. As I said before: there's lots of work to do here, but "fixing" your "bug" isn't one of them.

Personally I don't care if the incorrect appearances of his name outnumbers the correct ones. All that counts for me is how his name should be written and that's Jan de Bont.

BTW in fact "the credit information is entirely capitalized", it just happens that the 'e' in 'JAN DE BONT' is written in small caps.

I never said I didn't trust Ken. i said, just as with the Rules, you presume to KNOW more than you have any possibility of knowing. I like you, Tim but you are very presumptious and it does you a gross disservice.

Good! Let's just wait and see, then. Again: my bet is that we won't get the ability to have separate, non-linking entries for Jan de Bont and Jan De Bont in the program, and quite rightly so. In the ongoing battle against pointless multiple entries for the same people, it'd be about the stupidest thing we could do, as it would introduce new dual entries for thousands of people in our database. Although I pointed that out time and time again, you never even bothered to try to address it. Ken can do lots of things to improve dealing with these capitalization issues, but what you refer to as a "bug fix" is really the worst thing that could happen. It's slightly worrying that you are unable to see or understand that.

<deep sigh> How do comments like this help the discussion ahead? What's the point of that post? Why is it that you never really address the issue at hand, but always resort to stuff like this...?

Hi everybody

I really don't want multiple entrys of the same person in my database - how about a small upgrade with complete birthdate and some notes. Then we could enter common name, artist name and different spelling from the credits (for those who are very interested in this sort of thing  ), but only have ONE entry for each actor.

That's the most important issue here, is it not?

These issues are already addressed in the system. Birth year is used to distinguish two distinct individuals with the same name. Common name and credited name is addressed through the use of "credited as".
