Yesterday I started a common name thread for the comedian Irwin Corey. After checking some of his credits it seems like Professor Irwin Corey is his most credited name variant. So Professor Irwin Corey would be his common name.

I submitted a contribution for the film Car Wash changing the common name to Professor Irwin Corey and got several No votes with the reasoning that the Professor isn't part of the actual name.

The contribution rules state:
Military rank/affiliation or other honorifics should be included in the 'Credited As' field. Example: a credit of "Cpl. John Smith, USMC" should be entered as First Name: "John", Last Name "Smith", Credited As "Cpl. John Smith, USMC"

But in my understanding that rule only applies to actual honorifics and Irwin Corey isn't an actual professor. Professor Irwin Corey is the name of his stage character.

To quote wikipedia: From the late 1940s, Corey cultivated his "Professor" character. Dressed in seedy formal wear and sneakers, with his bushy hair sprouting in all directions, Corey would amble on stage in a preoccupied manner

I had a similar case a few years ago. Here is the link to the common name thread for Miss Beverly Hills.
In this thread the same question came up. This time about the title Miss.

ateo357 had a similar reasoning there:

Quoting ateo357:

I don't believe she has ever been crowned Miss Beverly Hills - it's more of a stage name so belongs in the first name field only and honorific doesn't apply.

so the common name would be which ever of the 3 variants has more titles, without dumbing it down and adding 2 different variants together because it would quickly give a common name.

This means, in my opinion, that Professor Irwin Corey also doesn't fall under the mentioned contribution rule and should be considered as his common name. What do you think?
Think different

Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.

I believe this also applies to "Professor Toru Tanaka" which is also a stage name not an honorific.

If that's indeed the common name - still a few confirmations to go - then I could see that as a stage name, yeah. If we do, keep in mind that the rules then require that it's entered "entirely in the first name field."

Should be just like "Cedric the Entertainer"...as a stage name.

Even before I saw the separate common name thread, once I saw the title of this thread I immediately figured it was probably about Professor Irwin Corey. Agreed with others that Professor should be treated as part of his stage name since he bestowed the title on himself.
