| Posted: | | | | Hi Ken,
I think it's time to think about another DVD identifier. While the UPC was a good idea in the beginning, now it's becoming more and more hindering.
First you had to invent the sales country as another part of the identifier. Then the disc ID was alos possible.
Now we have the situation that earlier releases use the UPC/EAN, later release use the disc ID.
For season boxes the disc Id of the first disc is used to identify a season box or it is used to identify the first disc (it depends if the season box itself has a UPC).
Honestly, I have no good idea what a perfect identifier would be but the current situation is no good either. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Skip I think we hit the issue today with the Blu-ray versions of the first two Spider-man films. The boxset has a UPC, but none of the films inside do. Only the third film is available separately, so you can't use existing UPCS for 1 & 2, nor can you use Disc-IDs for Blu-rays. |

| Posted: | | | | This particular problem, synner, is known and as Ken has stated has to wait for resolution for HIM to decide to purchase a BD-ROM Drive and probably an HD-DVDROM Drive, so he can figure out how to address the new Disc IDs.

Skip As much as I am always the optimist and eternal supporter... these purchases can and should be seen as a business expense and need to get done so we can figure out how to deal with issues such as this... and i would also recommend to ken a netflix account... this way certain situations like this one he can add the spiderman 1 and 2 disc id's to the database without having a user do it... at least for region A - i do not know if many users who activly contribute have bd-rom drives yet... hd-dvd ones on the other hand are easy.... the xbox add on can connect via usb and works quite nicely.... | | | -JoN |

| Posted: | | | | All things considered, a business is a business... i have no idea what dvd profiler's income looks like... but we all know it is enough for at least one of the coles to leave their day job... that being said... an xbox add on which works via USB runs $180 and comes with various free discs (since we know ken is a collectior as well) and a simple google search turns up that a pioneer internal drive runs about $300...
to me it would seem a that ~$500 is not a lot to pick up equipment vital to the continuation of development for this software.
in addition... we all also know that my profiler plus is right around the corner, and that should cause an immediate influx of cash flow for invelos - if that is what we are waiting for, then hopefully its right around the corner. | | | -JoN | | | Last edited: by ruineddaydreams |

Skip There IS an immediate problem with nested box sets where the "child" box sets have no UPC/EAN, as in the situation described here. There the first disc of the box set can only be profiled manually and cannot be contributed. The need for more identifiers is a direct consequence of the (recent) introduction of nested box sets. So I believe this is an issue that needs to be addressed. | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

Skip The problem I beleive he is running into, is where complete seasons are sold as a set. The entire set has a UPC, but the individually boxed seasons do not. That means you have to make a choice. Use the disc ID of the first disc, of each season, as the identifier for the season or for the individual disc. For people that want a parent profile for the entire set, a child profile for each season and a grandchild profile for each disc, this is a problem. I don't know what potential issues you see down the road, but this issue is a problem now. It would be nice if there was a fix for this...other than manual profiles. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | And I don't see the point why there shouldn't be all DVDs with the same EAN in the central database, no matter if it's a later edition of the same movie or an entire different movie. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

There it becomes a matter of man-power, I don't think it can be automated. Ken CAN and has in rare circumstances (only one I am aware of) allow for multiple listings for one UPC. It would simply be a huge task for him to deal with and still keep up with programming.

Well, in fact it is fairly common that there are multiple listings for one UPC - with different locations. |
