Not at all, surfeur,. I do not take anything you have to say seriously, I have tried repeatedly to explain it to you, you either can't or won't understand it. I am tired of playing with you, I will not block you in any form, but I simply cannot take anything you have to say with any degree of seriousness. You want to return to the days when anarchy ruled the day and i am not surprised, I am disappointed but I am not surprised.

Demonstration 3

The point in question is historic. No demand, no whine, just facts. If somebody writes there are flaws, he has something in mind, or it is just to be agressive.

Every honest person would say what he had in mind or apologize for being agressive...

A civil discussion is never destructive, in my opinion.

I agree with that. I'll take a very explicit example. In my last poll, I made a short history of the contribution system. Two users said there were flaws in it, one of them  adding spice with insults. But none of them give only one example of what was wrong in my statement. A constructive discussion could have been  to confront our views.

I was one of the two that said there were flaws.  If you really want examples of the flaws, here are a few:

  • There was always a legal issue with IMDb.  We simply ignored it.

  • The majority had no idea rules were being built.  Skip, on his own or with Dan, decided rules were needed.  He selected a group of users, they created the rules and gave them to Ken.

  • The rule stating we are not to 'carboncopy' another database did not come when 3.1 was released.  That rule was in place at IVS long before the move to invelos.

  • I have been a paid forum moderator for several companies over the years.  My experience and training has given me an insight into forums, and forum posters, that the average user does not have.  That thread was doomed from the second you created it.  That is why I didn't give examples...it wouldn't have mattered.

None of you have any comprehension of who I am, I will tell you that your imagined picture of me is completely wrong, that is relative ti nearly EVERYBODY not just you surfeur. All of you have some bizarre notion of me and we can continue this garbage or you can listen to what I am trying to tell you.

We do not have an imagined picture of you.  We have the picture you drew for us.  If it's the wrong one, well, draw us a new one.  How you are seen is, for the most part, up to you.

Edit: For the record, this is not aimed only as Skip.  This is something we all do, myself included.

I guess I should read the whole thread before I respond to a single post.  I have never questioned your honesty, please don't question mine.

You have some of the answers now, Surfeur.

To expand on what Unicus said the prohibition of IMDbv was also put into place long before there were Rules. As he noted we ignored them, until one day it was discocered that it was actually in WRITING in the Guidelines. The response of many users to such thing, including the inimitable Surfeur, was they are Guidelines and Guidelines don't HAVE to be followed and that is what he wants to return to.

I am amused that you people feel so put upon. I have not insulted any of you in the terms that have been applied to me, I have never questioned anyone's ethics, honesty, integrity not anything else. I will make sarcastic and snide remarks, I may even make a politically incorrect remark. Most of the times as it relates to my own comments personal insults are the product of your own imaginings, I will apologize for any insult that was made and was unitentional. The imagined slight directed at surfeur was just that imagined, it was political sarcasm and satire. However. direct attacks that re made regarding someone's ethics, honesty and integrity are NOT imagined. You peple can decide behave like humans and begin to treat everyone, me included, with some respect are you can continue to play your evil bloodsport, but don't cry when you get bit.

This was not aimed at you, as you were not agressive in your post.

As for your answer about the flaws in my historic statement, I think that you are quibbling (excuse if the term is not correct, I'm not used with it and found it in a dictionary). For example, I wrote that there was no legal problem, and you say "there was one, but we ignored it". Really, I think I was correct. When I spoke of the majority, I was refering to threads about removing the name of contributors, and a majority wanted another solution. It was then that rules were made. As for the carboncopy rule, I admit that it came before Invelos, but before, there were no notes on first contributions.

Now, I suppose Skip will write that it was exactly to what he thought when he spoke of flaws in my text...

Wrong I did not even begin to address the flaws, surfeur. And i don't intend to, there is no need, I merely expanded o one of Unicus' points.

In answer to chibul's suggestion (yes, it's an ON TOPIC POST!  )

The main reason I don't think returning to a guidelines and voting system will work is because it has to rely entirely on the voting system, and so relies on people voting.
With only a 3 day window to vote, this could mean a lot of lesser-owned DVDs may not get any votes, or any accurate votes.
You could also end up with a situation where a user could recruit friends in order to falsely "skew" results in their favour.
In short, we need the rules to keep profiles roughly on track even when there are no voters available to verify the submission.

How is that any different than now? Ken and Gerri still mostly go by the user vote, with the occasional exception here and there.

I personally think it's a great idea to allow it to be based on the community vote - that means it's a community decision.
"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
    different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
    Rapture."

The difference is that Ken and Gerri don't always go by user vote.
If the rules were changed to guidelines then they would have to, regardless of what the submission would do to the profile.
And community decisions only work when the community is large enough to create an accurate average of votes. Again, something that wouldn't work on the lesser-owned DVDs.
