The contribution notes say; Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. When there is no rating, or an unrated version of the film on the disc, use the NR rating. Use the “Adult” rating for all Adult films.

My question stems from having a DVD in my collection (Mantis in Lace) that the database shows as "Adult" although the DVD itself lists it as "NR" - my personal preference would be to change this to "NR" to match the data on the DVD cover and update the DVDprofiler database.

But this got me thinking ... I have a lot of "NR" disks, some of which I'd happily class as "Adult" while others are simply not rated because they were never submitted to the MPAA or the local equivalent rating organization - others like "Anne of Green Gables" are TV films outside the movie rating system.

How do you determine if a DVD is "Adult" or not?  "Adult" is not an MPAA rating (or a rating in any other country that I know of).  Isn't this going to be a rather personal and arbitrary decision?
Everything in the world is a second order system, if you're not too fussy. And if it isn't, you are.

If the rating on the cover explicitly states NR then the profile should be corrected.

As for DVDs without rating it is a mostly a safe bet to choose NR. If the film contains explicit content or if it is actual porn you should use the Adult rating.

I'd say "adult" should be used for X or XXX ratings. Most softcore porn would also fall under adult, just use the force of common sense. Does the movie only exist to show boobs, butts and simulated sex? If yes, it's adult.

If the cover say Unrated it's NR, this is not a question of personal preference. If the title is in the database with an adult rating this is completly wrong and incorect, sorry we have to go with what the DVD cover say and not with what we want it to say. I thing that this DVD is a Something Weird Video release (I don't own this one) so it's an exploitation movie and certainly not a XXX movie.

If you want to change it in the database do it, the rating (adult) curently in it is false, invented and completly against the rules.

Thi film s is described as "filled with nudity, some sexual activity, violence" in one review. The rules state that a Adult film should be ADULT rating. Changing this to NR is against the rules.

Where you can't decide it should be left at ADULT rating.
(This rating has the specific task of separating these films so that they can be restricted from children - it has NOTHING to do with what the rating is on the cover!)

I am sorry, but this is not correct.  This is the entire rule:

Use the Rating shown on the DVD cover. When there is no rating, or an unrated version of the film on the disc, use the NR rating. Use the “Adult” rating for all Adult films.

The last sentence applies to all adult films, regardless of what it says on the case.

Exactly. Some people here want to have accurate information, just look at the discussion about possesive title as an exemple. But if we talk about "adult movie" the accuracy of the information are not require anymore. An adult rating don't reference T&A, violence or fake sexual activity ...

By the way "adult" is not a rating in the U.S rating system Source

The only rating use by the MPAA are : G, PG, PG-13, R  and NC-17

NR is use when a movie is not rate by the MPAA

I've said it before but "adult" is not a rating in the U.S (and the original topic opener is from the U.S), so the way to deal with that is to use the genre "adult" and not a false and non existing rating.

Thta is if you assume that we comply with the MPAA Rating system all the time, which obviously we don't. We have our own rating category for adult.

Don't forget NR is also used on TV shows for profiler purposes.

IMO I don't think it's just about accuracy, it's about controlling how the program handles adult titles. In order to sort/hide/etc. adult titles they have to be rated 'adult', 'NC-17' or 'NR'. Since most TV is 'NR' that leaves 'NC-17' or 'Adult'.  If something is not rated NC-17 you can't arbitrarily give it an NC-17 rating but you can call it an adult title, per the rules.

Adding TV ratings would help but not eliminate the issue IMO

Maybe a checkbox to dictate "adult" outside of rating.  And have a guideline to what falls under adult.

Also to clarify the few that may not know, X and XXX are not MPAA ratings either.

I think Schultzy may have the best idea as we probably all have different ideas as to what constitutes an "adult" film.
A separate checkbox means the titles can still be marked as adult and yet we can still record the correct rating information for those that want it.

You are correct, 'adult' is not a rating in the U.S..  It is, however, a PROFILER rating and the rules are quite clear..."Use the “Adult” rating for all Adult films."

X is the ancient rating who equals the actual NC-17 (change made in 1990)
XXX is the common term use by the Porn industry to rate their production

The 1990 name change was made because of the misconception that X means pornographic in content. It was never the case, since X equals no one under 17 can view this movie.

The thing is easy to solve, at least for me, if the rating "adult" is delete (it doesn't exist, it's a movie genre) and the XXX rating is add. The XXX is not a real rating, but the industry itself use it and it's clear for everyone (I hope) that it means pornography.

So T&A movie who was release as X movie, but are now unrated will be enter corectly in the database for what they are and not for what they aren't (adult movie).

yes I do that.

But that is totally immaterial. The Adult rating is used for ALL the various countries profiles and is compulsory in order to use the Parental control feature within the program.

Which, if I am not mistaken, is done to conform to U.S. laws.  Because of that, I don't see this changing.
