What is the value/stature of a supervision art director when there is already an art director shown in the credits?  I see it more and more nowadays.  I can understand that such a function excist when working on a series or maybe when there is more then one art director, else I don't can't imagine.  Should we mention him as one of the basic crew members?

The supervising art director is the chief of the art and unit art directors who may all be listed as art directors in DVD Profiler.

It's a bit odd that Supervising Art is the only Credited As liisted in the rules, yet we include all art directors...

While I certainly agree that the supervising art director should be credited, I'm strongly against entering any form of unit crew.

What if the art director(s) in the unit is the only credited art director?

The reason for this apparent issue is very simple, Supervising Art Director was not discovered until after the Rules were published, and they have not yet been modified. The Supervising Art Director is usually the head of the department, it would be a bit odd to credit the people that work under the boss but not the boss himself. There are as Enry, noted MANY times when he is the only credited AD for some bizzare reason known only to Hollywood. Now OTOH, as Tim implied I believe there are also AD's or even SAD's which are part of a unit crew and at this time we do not accomodate Unit or Location Crew data.

Whether he/she is or isn't the only art director doesn't matter, because there's nothing in the rules that would keep you from entering any unit art director as art director.

I have never seen a credit called Unit Art Director, they were always credited as Art Director below a divider called Unit.

And that's the same to me. As with previous debates on various crew segments: we can't enter them all since we don't have a way to show the difference in DVD Profiler. The rules seem very clear in how to deal with unit crew: we're clearly not allowed to list unit directors, nor unit cinematographers. It's true that someone forgot the include the same note in the "Incorrect Roles" column for art directors, but the intent seems clear: we're not after unit crew. If we can't list a unit director or a unit cinematographer, why would you want include unit art directors? Either we track unit crew, or we don't. Not just one little segment of them - and even if we were tracking these, I'd be certainly be more interested in unit directors, not art directors. Like all other crew segments, we're after the main art director(s), usually listed somewhere at the beginning of the end credits. We're not after loads of additional unit crew buried somewhere deep down in those credits - we might as well start entering every unit's production sound mixer. Again, there's no way to differentiate between these people in DVD Profiler, and therefore we don't include unit crew.

It maybe the same to you, and whether or not they are forgotten or the intent seems to be not to enter any unit crew, but that's not relevant. As long as this is not specified in the rules we could and can conclude that there's an exception for unit art directors and we're allowed to enter them.

Well, it's a grey area, but I see your point.  Still, if the Art Director in the unit crew happens to be the only Art Director in the credits, there is no "main" Art Director (other than that). That's why I was asking what would you do in such a situation.
