Out of idle curiosity, what do folks plan on doing about the thousands of genre films that will never get a blu release?  I appreciate the whole "hi-def rules" concept, but isn't that like cutting off the nose to spite the face?

Yep.  There are several films i'm still waiting to arrive on DVD, to say nothing of high def.  I'll take them in either format (hell, i'd take an HD-DVD at this point):

Ruby in Paradise
Late for Dinner
Electric Dreams
Jack's Back
Ground Zero
Doc Hollywood (widescreen)
Paula Poundstone - Cats, Cops and Stuff
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

OK.  I just assumed most folks were out to get the film, not necessarily to adhere to a specific media format.  Whenever I read the "I only buy blu" comment, I just find myself amazed that someone would want to limit themselves so severely.

... which is why my system is multiregion and multisystem. I gather yours isn't then - you might consider picking up a player that is able to handle it all at some point (an upconverting Oppo, anyone?  ) in order to stop depriving yourself from what's available elsewhere.

Man, this all "Blu-Ray" thing is giving me the creeps, even though I don't have half the amount of DVD's that most of you guys have.

Like, should I start buying only Blu-Ray, or should I continue with DVDs, how long will DvDs still exist?
etc etc.
Atleast it's not as bad a change as the VHS -> DvD was, considering that you can play DvDs on a Blu-Ray player.

Actually, I think the Doc Hollywood in the Michael J. Fox Comedy 3 Pack is widescreen. I would need to  check it out, but I remember removing Doc Hollywood from my collection and planning on getting this (if not actually adding it to my wishlist) for this very reason.

I've been region free since day 1. For DVD that is, because my blu-ray player is not. But I also have an upscaling dvd player which is region free. A lot of stuff isn't available here, or we are stuck with a crappy versions (some dutch companies still release full screen versions, or discs with only 2.0 audio, even for recent films).

Lucky for Blu-Ray until now, the Blu-Rays I purchased were mutli-region. The US Dirty Harry boxset looks way better than the NL cardboard box holding 5 HD Keep cases.

All I am saying is I prefer Blu for my viewing. I still have over 1000 DVD's that I watch. Anything worth getting in blu, I get it. Things that only get released on DVD, I sometimes make a exception for something like the Little Rascals collection, or Three Stooges collections, or something that will probably never get a proper(new transfer, clean image) release on blu like the recent Xmen animated series releases. I don't buy alot of niche/genre movies as much as I have in the past, because more often or not their just not worth it to me; just my opinion.

It also depends on price some movies are crazy. Erin  Brockovich $54 on Blu-ray it a good movie but, not that good.

Upcovert on DVD is jusat as good as Blu-ray on some movies. I have the Eddie Murphy movie Life DVD and it looks it in HD.
